Riding to and from Outdoor Workout Sessions

Hi Forum,

I’m pretty new to training apps and only 2 months into using TR but enjoying it as well as taking in all the knowledge from the podcast.

Does anyone know how commute rides to & from a workout session affect the evaluation?

I do not own a indoor trainer so I ride ~5mi to a cycling-dedicated veloway where I start my workout sessions, and after the session is completed, I ride ~5mi back home. I keep my RPE comfy and chill on my commute rides to the veloway; primarily staying in Z1, sometimes creeping into Z2.

During my entire first training block in February (Increasing FTP), I would begin recording a ride from my home, commute to the veloway, start the workout on my Wahoo, finish the workout, and continue to ride home at a relaxed pace. Viewing my workouts for that month, I can see clearly where my workout starts and ends, and I’m assuming my Wahoo picks up when I actually hit ‘start’ and ‘end’ during the ride.

My first month felt great; I don’t think I failed any workouts; the Ai prescribed what was either a workout that felt just right or slightly easy (The rating survey is a whole other can of worms). So that entire month of training accumulated to a +0.5 FTP increase. I have definitely noticed increases in speed + endurance, so this is not a question of whether or not I’m getting faster.

On March 26, I decided to begin recording my commutes to the workouts as separate rides. After doing so, TR via desktop did some hard computing, and after about 10mins of the Prediction working, it gave me a +11.9 ftp bump.

I’m wondering if the Ai is seeing all my past workouts as longer than necessary and lowered my prediction based on the extra stress the commutes were adding to the workouts.

How does TR Ai validate when a workout session is started and ends? Is it based on ride start? Does it look at HR data to confirm intervals are started? Is there validation on the back end through the workout ingest that TR knows when buttons are pressed on a head unit/device?

Hey @Photovongsa  Welcome!!!

What you are doing sounds just fine. Outside riding is a bit more messy than indoors, so using those 5 miles to the veloway as your warm-up is great. Starting the ride from home and extending the warm up until you get to destination.

As far as the AI FTP Prediction goes, we’ve identified an issue with how our model projects planned outside workouts. If the entire plan is set up as outside workouts, this affects your predictions more than most.

Our team has a fix ready for this that will go out alongside some broader model improvements, so predictions for outdoor plans should be more accurate from the start going forward.

That said, your prediction is still going up! And it looks like your rating your interval workouts as Hard-Moderate + you’ve definitely noticed increases in speed + endurance!
