So, I smashed my face and lost a tooth last week. The recovery process has been very taxing, and with my lips so messed up, it’s been hard to eat and drink. I’ve lost weight, which on the surface could seem good, but this is not how I want to do it.
I tried a ride on the trainer yesterday, five days post-injury. I found it hard to breathe; I think my nose has some tissue damage or just general swelling. I had an easy 75-minute endurance ride on the schedule, but 15 minutes in, I knew there was no way I could complete it. So I quit at 30 minutes and answered the survey, saving the workout.
So now my endurance levels have dropped. I’m not sure I’ll be able to do much more when I try again tomorrow.
I’m bummed that the injury not only cost me time off the bike, and is reducing what I can do as I get back to it, but it’s going to mess up my prescribed workouts. I have 4 months to Leadville, and I’m sweating it a little.
So, finally, my question is: Should I do free rides for a while and then start doing prescribed workouts once I think I can actually complete them? And by free, I mean indoors just spinning…my hands and face are not ready for the outdoors yet.

To directly answer your question: yes, when you’re able and ready to return to training, TrainerRoad will meet you where you are.
Your Progression Levels will reflect your current capabilities, not where you left off. That means you won’t be thrown into workouts that are too intense or misaligned with your current fitness. Instead, your plan will adapt to ensure that you rebuild sustainably, with workouts that match what your body can handle.
Right now, though, the most important thing is your healing. All you can do is support your recovery as best you can. Try not to let cycling become a source of stress. If you’re able to ride and it feels good, let that be enough. If you can’t ride yet, that’s okay too. Your fitness will come back, but only if your body is given the time and space it needs to fully recover

Yes, that is how I have to think about it. Adding stress that takes away from healing does absolutely no good. Thanks so much for your encouraging words! I’ll do my best to not let the progression levels become a source of stress either! haha. Thanks again.
