Pro Cycling Thread 2024

Nice surprise this morning as I found the Giro being streamed live for free on BeIN Sports Xtra. They’re using the world feed commentary of Ned Boulting and Matt Stephens. I’m watching using the PlutoTV app on my Roku. Picture quality is OK, not great. Quite a few commercials though.

Im spoiled with GCN+ now and whenever I have to watch it on Eurosport linear I feel like throwing stuff at the TV

Ironically now I’m pumped when American tv isn’t attempting to cover a race because it usually means that I can use GCN without the VPN.

VPN not that annoying but it chokes when you transition from WiFi to cellular, eg walking the dog.

I’m still miffed that they canned the Eurosportplayer in favor of GCN+ or Discovery+ (which isn’t even available here…) . For GCN+ I would pay the same as for my Eurosport subscription but wouldn’t have the coverage of all the other sports… Oh well the Eurosport website is decent enough but a dedicated app on the mobile platforms would be helpful, and labeling the Non Linear Stream without Add breaks properly would also be nice…

Does anyone think that after stage 2 Mads Pedersen over did it during the classics and likely will not win points jersey? It looked like he was struggling to stay with Matthews.

The start to this stage is quite possibly the most brutal start I’ve seen.

I think he got to the finish without much in the tank after the climbs.

Very sad that most of the riders don’t show their power on strava. And at the same time Velon collects data from the riders and then they release some stupid data. For example remco; Velon tells us he did 430w in first 3km on ITT, thats it? OK??? Like whats even point of the velon?

But im super happy that there are riders who show power! Kudos to them.

Oooof…that finish today.

Remco is kinda to blame for his crash though…he was looking left while drifting right and never saw the Trek rider coming up on his right.

Cav…man, dunno what to say. He came out and hit the wind and immediately sat up, then shifted back to the right into the bunch. Thought they were gonna save it for a minute…but he did a nice Superman across the line.

ETA - looks like Cav’s rear wheel slid on the white line when he tried to open up his sprint and that is what caused him to sit up.

He got chopped pretty bad by the DSM rider. heck of a way to finish 5th on a stage.

Yes, agree. Dainese (DSM) cut across in a gap that was too small and clipped Cavs front wheel. No surprise it went downhill from there. Cav drifted to the right as well, but at best the blame is shared between them.

Yeah, it was an odd chain of events, cav slips a rear wheel when in the wind, tries to come back into the draft right as Dainese is trying to come out of the draft. Dainese’s move was across a lot more lateral space than cav coming back in.

Remco reportedly in a “lot of pain”…and we all know it gets worse before it gets better.

Winning a GT it’s a lot more than having great lungs and legs.

You’re probably right, but there’s always the chance it’s just gamesmanship too.

With Geraint, Primoz, Remco and this weather we may be shaping up for the most crash prone GC field in recent history.

Being completely honest, while I hope Remco isn’t too banged up I wouldn’t mind if he was a little banged up. While the general commentary still has been “anything can happen in the 3rd week!” I think the race would be more interesting if Remco doesn’t go into that 3rd week with a massive lead over everyone else based on TT dominance.

Cav 4th now, so assume Dainese was relegated? Seems maybe a little harsh, looked a 50:50 racing incident to me with Dainese moving left as Cav moved right. Having already lost traction on the white line Cav had no chance of winning that sprint anyway so the safe option was for him to stay in the wind in the left and out of trouble, but easy to say that with the benefit of hindsight and guess his sprinter instincts kicked in and caused him to move back into the draft.

thanks, it was really hard to see from the front camera.

At first I thought Cav bounced off that guy and ricocheted over to the wall. But then I saw some chaotic movement and figured it was equally likely he got a “hockey hip check” on his left side and then did the ricochet to the wall.
