Power Meters for MTB

I moved your post under the lengthy one that covers many options.

Hello, has anyone run an oval chainring with their PM?

I’ve come across some info that does show some incorrect power by 2%, but wanted to know if there was a big issue?

I pulled the trigger today to try the Favero Assioma with Xpedo M-Force 8 pedal conversions…

IMO based on the pod location, I think these will be the safest PM outside of a spider. I also like that I can move them from bike to bike without much fuss. You also cannot argue with the accuracy of the units at this point either, I am pretty pumped!

I use an oval chainring with my P2Max on my SC Blur. I’ve seen those numbers that they can be a few percent off. I would say anecdotally that the numbers are probably pretty good. Of course I have no way to directly compare, but when considering my RPE, differences between MTB and Road etc, I think it’s pretty close.

Do you only want to run pedal PMs? I bought a Stages and it’s fine for what I need it to be, but I have a Stages on my road bike so it’s consistent across the two.

2%, which way? I’ve run vectors converted to XC, on oval and round, and couldn’t tell the difference. It didn’t make me, or seem, any faster. I did notice that the rear derailleur moves/oscillates because of the varying chain length on the oval, possibly causing excess wear on the derailleur. Perhaps I am weak, but a few watts in the dirt is hard to find anyways.

I have tried the Assioma mod for mtb but was not convinced. Between the pod sticking out and having to grind the shoe sole it wasn’t worth it for me. I have since bought an x-cadey spider powermeter for about 200 usd. It is 104bcd and works wonderfully well with my m7100 cranks. I have never even bothered to compare power readings between the spider and the pedals, maybe when I start training intervals in mtb. So far, the power I see on the mtb correlates well with HR and RPE.

Thanks a lot for your answer! I’ve seen many others using Power2Max, but: how compatible and easy to change between bikes are they? I’m planning to change bike in 5-6 months time, and I don’t know if compatibility would be an issue.

Thanks!

I don’t know your exact situation and I am not familiar with P2Max powermeters, but I would assume at worst you would need to change bottom bracket and cranks to stay with the compatible PM.

I have one on my road bike and another one on my MTB. Reach out to their support team, they will definitely help you.

I run a Xcadey spider with Oneup ovals on my Enduro rig. GP Lama did mention about running it at 103% (prior to updates) for Xcadey spider based PM. I suspect the oval adds a few % higher as well as I train with round but all my outdoor rides are oval… I observe this as a same wattage number seems “easier” than on the indoor bike…

I use the rally xc one sided pedal with an oval chainring and the power doesn’t seem off to me. Very hard to judge though!

May I ask your thoughts on this power meter in general? What cranks are you using with it?

Looks like I am going to join the NGEco club on my “trail” bike. Race Face won’t warranty my Cinch PM without my receipt from a couple years ago. I thought about trying to repair it, I think it’s the best PM I have had yet, but I know I will never get to it. P2M is the only option with the Race Face cranks that I have no interest in replacing.

Here’s the article on http://djconnel.blogspot.com/2013/09/simulation-of-power-error-from-constant.html[article](http://djconnel.blogspot.com/2013/09/simulation-of-power-error-from-constant.html).

If I’m not mistaken, it would show a +2% increase of power?

I think it’s pretty good for the price. I can’t tell you 100% about the accuracy but it feels close enough to my RBs Favero Assioma. I am using it with a Raceface Next R crank… bargain buy definitely…

Agree. The Cinch PM works is good. Too bad i need to charge it for every ride. Main reason I’m not sending it for warranty is that its not that easy to swap the spindle and costs for shipping from Malaysia is going to be worth it…

Mine, for the past few months, wouldn’t wake up from sleep without plugging it in. It didn’t need a charge, just plug in and unplug and it woke up.

Mine battery lasts for 2 days. Maybe after a few months owning it…

2% error is 4 watts at a 200 watt output. I cannot feel that difference. Statistically, this is probably significant, but not substantial. And we are awfully close to the manufacturers claims of accuracy. Really aplitting hairs, and probably not impacting training, or racing. If one feels it is too easy, pedal harder.
