Possible to Increase Weekly TSS Volume Based on Train Now Alone (No Plan)

I’m only a year into interval work and a year into structured training. I’m also a year into using TR.

I’m kind of a “fly by the seat of my pants” guy which, obviously, isn’t a great fit for structured training. Using TN as my sole source of workout guidance has been great. Basically, I do a HIIT workout every second day with the days in between entirely off. I enjoy it and have been getting good results from it.

My QUESTION is this: will TN eventually increase my weekly TSS volume as an actual plan would tend to?

My perception of things so far is that TN is just looking at my past work and, generally, not exceeding previous weekly TSS. That, or it’s increasing it so slowly that I’m having difficulty perceiving the increase. I would eventually like to ride a bit more than I currently do. But I want to do that safely and productively of course.

If TN isn’t built to increase volume in this way, then I might consider switching to a true plan.

Anybody know how this aspect of things works?

TSS is partly constrained within the length of the suggested workout. You will have to manually set your preferred workout length to get a suggestion with higher TSS.

to do what you want safely i would suggest to keep the HIIT Workout every second day and start by adding easy days on those entirely off days.

Hey @KootK!

You can do as @TomasIvarsson suggested as TN will not progressively add TSS as a plan does.

If you think you’ll have consistency I would suggest creating a plan, but if not then choosing longer workouts may be your best bet!

RLGL can also help guide if you should be resting or taking it easy on a given day to prevent fatigue!

Thanks, all, for your responses.

Oh, I’m already using RLGL along with TN. I suppose that I should have mentioned that at the outset. My hope was that TN + RLGL would gradually allow me more weekly TSS as my fitness increases.

My sense of how thing have been going with this scheme thus far is that, on any given day, TN suggests the highest TSS workout that it thinks I can handle on on any given day. And, based on RLGL, that sometimes amounts to a rest / endurance day.

If I take every other day off, as I have been for the most part, TN basically always gives me a high intensity workout. It’s never recommended any endurance work.

Over the holidays, I temporarily reverted back to all Z2 work for two weeks (ignoring TN but respecting RLGL). Done that way, RLGL lets me do three days on for every one day off. But still, roughly, a similar weekly TSS to what I was doing previously.

If a plan is a my best bet, I’ll give some some serious consideration.
