Please wait 8 hours between posts in this topic?

I guess I don’t understand the forum software.

An hour ago, that topic said to wait 2 hours between posts but now I see two more posts and it still tells me to wait 2 hours.

I haven’t even posted in the topic recently so I know it’s not to do with anything I’ve posted.

Is this some kind of user by user message - different lengths of time for different people?

Not getting it!

Edit: another posted showed up in that topic but I’m still on two hour delay. (I don’t even have anything to post. Just finding it strange.)

AFAIK, the time limit is per individual, not the topic itself.

  • If you post in one with a 2 hour setting, it effectively starts a self-timer and prevents you from posting another time within that 2 hour range.

  • Once that 2 hours expires, you can then post again… rinse & repeat. So it’s per user from what I have seen.

  • Unless you posted in that time range, I’d expect you to be able to post if you tried.

Thanks Chad. I posted once in that particular topic 4 days ago so that doesn’t quite explain the perpetual 2 hour time limit.

(I’ve been seeing this on random topics that I’ve not even been participating in over the last few days - sometimes 2 hours, 6 hours, or 8 hours.)

Maybe @ZackeryWeimer could look into it?

I see it too. It’s not just you. It’s something about that particular thread. I feel like maybe I remember this from another thread that was locked for a week and then reopened, so if I’m remembering that correctly, maybe it’s just the way Discourse works.

Hey there –

The “Slow Mode” you’ve seen on some topics is a moderation tool we’ve been using to manage threads that become controversial or spiral out of control. If you see threads like that, then it’s because we’ve gone in and deleted a bunch of comments to get the thread back on track.

Setting a time gate encourages forum users to post more thoughtfully on those hot-topic threads, which helps to prevent them from devolving into a messy online argument.

Slow Mode isn’t a permanent setting, so every thread we use it on eventually opens back up to “normal” posting speeds – usually once those more chaotic/inappropriate discussions settle down.

Okay, but is the 4x8hr delay really more effective than a 2 or 6 hr delay?
I’d like to see the data and academic study that backs that up.
Then I’ll know which delay I should follow religiously before speaking out.

It’s more about TiD and hitting delay fatigue that really matters. Anything else is just junk delay
