Peloton's blockbuster IPO (NASDAQ: PTON): What impact, if any, do you see it having on TrainerRoad?

Seismic shift in strategy for Peloton….you are no longer tied just to Peloton programming / workouts for entertainment on their bikes.

First post on the this thread. I’m not familiar at all with peloton bikes or their workouts, but are thier bikes quality on par with other offerings aimed at endurance athletes like wattbike, etc? Looks like it would be cool if you could run TR on that screen as well as watch whatever you wanted like you can do on a PC.

Quality bikes. However that locks you into higher monthly subscription rates with Peloton, versus bring your own bike/trainer.

Just an FYI - streaming is currently only in Beta.

Unless they have changed, they are spin bikes which is different than bikes aimed at athletes.

I just don’t see the case for peloton bike and a $40/month sub if you already own a good bicycle. One would be better served by a quality wheel off trainer and any other training app.

Counter point - they are very good spin bikes, the latest bike has accurate power, easy to adjust for you and your spouse, the classes are fun, and they have a LOT of classes (strength, yoga, stretching, cardio, …). Its like paying $44/month for a gym membership, assuming you’ve got some weights at home for the other classes.

Some of the fastest guys I know have a Peloton, share with their wife, and post Peloton spins on Strava.

I don’t own a Peloton, have used at hotels, and have plenty of neighbors that are addicted to the classes. My 65 year old neighbor is ripped and looks like she is in her 40s. She has Treadmill, Bike+, and also does the strength classes.

Sub $6 today. Wonder if it gets to $20 by the holidays?

I never said they were bad at all. I just couldn’t see myself getting on a Peloton over my Kickr. My wife would probably like one.

If my wife would ride, for space reasons I’d probably get a Peloton Bike+ and call it a day. Most of my riding is outside. I would love to have an indoor bike in a spare bedroom for a quick & easy 20-minutes first thing in the morning.

My bike is always ready to go on the trainer (indoors, AC, nice setup). I was thinking that I should also do 20-30 minutes of easy first thing every morning to increase volume. That would put me over 10 hours a week but I’ve yet to implement that idea.

My bike is never on the trainer, in fact my trainer is in a box in the garage. I’ve got 1 bike, its always ready to ride outside. My Kickr also has an InsideRide e-Flex and its at least 5 minutes on/off due to the front thru-axle (wrench clearance). And that 5 minutes assumes the Kickr is NOT in the box behind my kettlebells.

I broke down and picked up a few. If it goes to $10, I’ll double my money. If not, it’ll be a tax write-off.

1st gen version were not particularly accurate and would report watts much higher than you were actually pushing. 2nd gen version (per @dcrainmaker) have been accurate compared to a powermeter.

Some of the drawback of using a Peloton vs a spin bike would be no Erg mode, Peloton does not send power info to Trainerroad or Zwift (you can get around it using power pedals), and you could argue that there are fit and geometry limitations based on your current bike fit

A couple relevant articles which I think might be buried somewhere above as well:

One of the advantages of using a Peloton is that only Peloton classes support Erg mode

 laughing because yes, thats actually how I see it

One potential disadvantage for math nerds is 2-sec recording rate, which can be weird when importing into some analytics.

Have you said too much… Is your other half on the TR forum?

Love it… you lucky guy.

Nice to raise a smile over the internet rather than the alternatives.

Having said that, he seems to want 20 minutes in the spare bedroom every morning…:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Two kids, 29 years and amazingly we haven’t killed each other  I’d do it all over again. My theme song for her is Cake’s Short Skirt, Long Jacket…. ”I want a girl with a short skirt and long jacket, who uses a machete to cut thru red tape” sing it with me! :joy:
