It is intentional, but I personally think it’s too aggressive. Means I’ll be avoiding FTP tests until I know I’m looking at a significant change.
At least the level system makes that a realistic option now though.

Agreed. I’m in the same boat of not wanting to touch my FTP because the PLs go crazy even with small adjustments.
Friend of mine had a 1% FTP change and it lopped between 1 and 2 levels off his progressions.
Is pretty ridiculous. Should be no need to change anything at all there as that sort of FTP difference is within the margins of error.
I can’t comment personally as I’ve avoided ramp tests since the last one I did completely cleared all my progression levels and left me flailing around for three weeks trying to work out what levels I was supposed to be training at.
Why would a reduction of 1 to 2 levels of progression be bad? One week of “easy” evaluations will crank those up anyway.
Because they shouldn’t change at all given your FTP basically hasn’t.
Sure, you could argue that a couple of weeks wont make much of a difference, but for someone that struggles with grading their sessions (for instance, all VO2max basically feels hard to me), it can cause problems for quite a while.
I had an 1% FTP change as well and my PLs didn’t change at all.
Bizarre. They showed me screenshots so no reason for me to disbelieve them.
Unless it was decay rather than FTP test, though strange for that to happen all at once.
Considering most FTP tests are at the end of a rest week there’s every chance the decay could begin kicking in after an easy week .
Question: I know before AT was out of Beta, moving a future workout broke adaptations for that workout. Is that still the case? I’d like to shift all me workouts next week by 1-day (from M-W-F to T-Th-S).
Can I do that safely today or is it best to wait until each day to shift one to the right.
Hey, all!
Providing a TrainNow Help Center update, we added an FAQ section to the TrainNow Overview to help clear up some common points of confusion athletes were having. I’ll post them here as well:
TrainNow will recommend workouts based on your recent TrainerRoad workouts and non-structured indoor/outdoor riding. It’s important to note that while TrainNow will look at your most recent workouts when making a recommendation, it does not consider periodization, fatigue, or other factors. For instance, it will not recognise if you need a recovery week. If you are looking for that type of structure and periodization, we recommend using a training plan. TrainNow is primarily intended for athletes who aren’t on a training plan, or for those who like to supplement unstructured riding with occasional structured workouts.
The “Recommended” label is based on the intensity and stress of your recent rides and workouts. It’s not intended to replace a training plan, but it’s a quick and simple way to make sure you’re completing a sustainable mix of workouts. For instance, if you have completed some tough VO2 Max workouts in a week, it’s likely you’ll see an Endurance workout recommended.
TrainNow bases its recommendations exclusively on your relative abilities in each training zone, determined by your success in recent workouts. It does not consider periodization or fatigue. Eventually, we’re looking forward to adding more proactive fatigue-related recommendations as our dataset grows.
In almost every case TrainNow will suggest ‘Achievable’ or ‘Productive’ workouts. Workouts that are suggested utilize Progression Levels and Workout Levels, by zone, to suggest workouts of either ‘Achievable’ or ‘Productive’ Difficulty Level. However, if Adaptive Training analyses that you had a very successful workout in a given training zone, you may see ‘Stretch’ and ‘Breakthrough’ workouts from time to time. If you’d like to choose a Stretch or Breakthrough workout more often, we recommend using Workout Alternates.
Some training zone & duration combinations might not have “Achievable” or “Productive” workouts for your current Progression Level. When that happens, TrainNow won’t display a suggestion for that training zone and duration. Try adjusting the duration filter to find workouts closer to your Progression Level. In any case, we’re actively working to fill these gaps with new workouts.
TrainNow suggests optimal workouts for your current abilities, based on your Progression Levels in each power zone and your desired workout duration. Because our workout library is so extensive, there are usually multiple workouts available that fit the bill. Pressing shuffle or looking on another platform prompts TrainNow to suggest different options from within this list of suitable workouts.
Completing TrainNow workouts will not cause Adaptive Training to adapt the schedule of your Plan Builder training plan. However, completingTrainNow workouts will contribute to your Progression Levels, which could lead to adaptations of workouts in your training plan.
TrainNow bases its recommendations exclusively on your relative abilities in each training zone, determined by your success in recent workouts. It does not consider periodization or fatigue and will give the same suggestions regardless of whether or not you’re following a structured training plan. This is why we recommend TrainNow primarily for athletes who like to supplement unstructured riding with occasional structured workouts. It’s not intended as a replacement for a training plan.
As always, if you have questions or concerns about your specific TrainNow recommendations or think something is amiss, support@trainerroad.com has the BEST visibility and insight to see whats going on. They’ll be happy to help!
Adaptive training doesn’t as far as I know, take account of non-TR workout rides. From the announcement it looks like train now actually does this when it recommends workouts, is this right?
Is it possible to update your FTP without having the system mess with your workout levels? I find it always overcorrects (for me), and then I spend the next two weeks dialling it back in.
I only have a small change in my FTP, so I’d really prefer to continue working up the levels I’m already using (mid range for most). I appreciate I could just leave my FTP as is, but that seems less than ideal.
Not as far as I know, but an email to support may be useful.
For what it’s worth, I have seen the amount of “reset” in PL’s from FTP changes to be dialed back now vs what it did even a few months ago. It’s possible they have tweaked the deltas applied, or may just be related to the 2-4% change in FTP that I got as the reason. Either way, the reset was more practical and made sense to me, so things may well be different now.
Sadly I found even what it did 4 weeks ago (for me) well over the top, so I’d rather avoid it happening again (though this increase is a smaller percentage).
Will ask support.
Woah, what happened? Did you drop your FTP?
Make sure to email support. I’ve seen others with some “bad adaptations” along these lines. They are actively working on the bug from what I saw, but hopefully they can make a quick fix for you to get more appropriate adaptations in short order.
No change to FTP. Had just finished a 1.5h level 4.5 and apparently it now hates me so thought a 2.6 increase was appropriate. lol
Wouldn’t be so bad, but in my experience higher levels tend to be harder when they’re shorter (just because I’m built for endurance, not harder / shorter intervals).
