It is however, carrying on the Poc aero tradition of (if I was being generous) what one might call a challenging look!
As it looks like we’ve come full circle to 1985, I’d like to see a wind tunnel test versus a $20 Bell/Schwinn helmet from Walmart.
You can even get some Disney princesses.
That lime peel is probably super lightweight
It looks to me like they might do the opposite and direct wind noise INTO the ear. In all the pics it just covers the top of the ear, not the hole.
Have you seen anything where the companies say it reduces wind noise? I’d gladly be proven wrong.
In the examples you cited, the difference is that the leading edge is covered by fairings. For the new Kask lid, the leading edge of your ears are still exposed ( depending on head position).
It is entirely possible that the design reduces wind noise (as I noted originally), but I wouldn’t necessarily assume it. For example, may full TT lids, which have your ears completely covered, can be quite loud.
It also would not surprise me if any possible wind noise abatement is extremely personal, varying with head position, ear shape, helmet size, etc.
Yeah, those two examples look nothing like the Kask helmet due to positioning. It’s kind of like saying no wind goes in a helmet vent because there’s a lip below it.
Again though, I hope I’m wrong about the noise.
Yeah, I live where it’s very hot and humid, so I’ll never be buying an aero design. I’m all about more wind on my head!
This.
When I had that bumpy, cheese hole Catlike Mixino some years ago, I didn’t notice any difference in wind noise because it’s not something I’ve ever thought about. But in any new group, there’d be a couple riders who would keenly ask about wind noise with a concerned or quizzical look on their face. I was like, I don’t know… sorry. Obviously a factor for some and not others.
