Registration is open for the Waterbury Gravel Grinder. Looks like a fun route with multiple distance options and it’s for a good cause, benefiting the local trail association.
I have a registration for Natchaug Epic (male category) next Sunday (March 24th) that I can’t use. The event is sold out. DM me if you’d a slot; deadline to transfer entries is tomorrow (March 18th) at 11:59pm.
At the risk of offending fellow New Englanders…that’s nuts More power too you if you enjoy it though!
It was 70F one day last week in western MA/northern CT and I was riding in a shortsleeve jersey. Thats a bit more my speed
I’m out for anything this coming weekend. I’ll sit on the trainer for 4 hours over that
I am entered in the Mix Tape Gravel “Event” on April 7th for my first official event of the year. Not sure whether or not to call it a race, more of an XC/Gravel mixed surface Fondo? Need to start getting out on my XC bike, so will be using that.
I’ve just signed up for the Waterbury Gravel Grinder on May 5th, but I’m looking for an event in June.
Q: For anyone that’s done The Wilmington-Whiteface MTB 100, is it doable on a gravel bike if your technical skills are above-average?
I think if you’re above average, you’ll be fine. I’ve seen people who’ve ridden them both of the last two years I was there although I know some people have regretted the decision (An XC Bike will be faster overall)
The issue IMO is the long / fast descents. One in particular can be pretty chunky for how fast you can get going, I watched a guy crash pretty hard on an MTB last year.
Thanks for the reply. I don’t have an MTB anymore, but might give it a shot anyway
EDIT: I signed up, I already feel like I’m bringing a knife to a gunfight, at least I’ll have plenty of excuses
Has anyone done this ride? The 70 mile 9k ft route looks like a good way to see if my winter training has been paying off
Yeah, there was a decent mount of pavement when I did it, but it was a good event, and the course will test your fitness
I did it a couple years back when it was slightly later in the season. That course is unrelenting!
Like in a good way, or a “why do I do this to myself” kind of way?
Depends on your fitness
For me, in a good way, until the last 10 miles, when it moved decisively into “Why?”
Killington is on. May 25-27.
Man if this was a different weekend I’d love to do it. Already signed up for the Tour of Somerville crit weekend though.
Anyone going to be at the Mix Tape (Dartmouth, MA) this Sunday? I’ll be there on the XC Bike if anyone wants to put a face to a name…
Should be nice and muddy with the weather we’re having…

This is an accurate assessment My legs were done after 5 hrs and had to trim the last ~6miles from the 73mi route. It was a fun ride and would definitely recommend it to fellow New Englanders though. The pics don’t don’t justice…the climbs were hard!! There were some sketchy decents that I think had my HR as high as the climbs.
