More clarity in the UI

Calendar is public.

I want to be up front about one thing first - I’m not upset that the predicted AI FTP dropped. What I want is more clarity around why.

Did this workout yesterday. It predicted it to be Hard or Very Hard. I was skeptical I could even finish this when I looked at it, but once I actually started, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I had made it out to be in my mind (So the training is working!). The AI predicted it to be “hard”, but just barely, as the “Very Hard” prediction wasn’t too far behind.

Post-workout, the AI FTP prediction dropped from 327 to 325. I just want to know why. I know I had to step off for a quick bathroom break before the intervals started (when you gotta go, you gotta go), but that block is Zone 1, lasted about a minute and was before any actual work had been done. This was a threshold workout. Threshold increased. No breaks, no missing power targets during the actual work. So why did it drop? I rated it where the AI thought it would be.

Yes, I also did a recovery ride after this workout. No, it didn’t change the score. I specifically looked at the new estimation before I went on the social ride. Yes, it was a true social ride - avg HR 111, no sprinting or efforts. It didn’t affect the prediction positively or negatively.

Why this matters:

Let’s say it was due to the bathroom break. What part of the score did it lower specifically? Surely the 1:19 pause in zone 1 before I actually needed any rest wasn’t worth -2w FTP prediction. But it doesn’t say. If that was the issue, then maybe next time, I put off starting the workout for another 30 minutes, but there’s nothing for me to go on. No way for me to see if there’s something outside of training that I can do to change it.

So I guess what I’m looking for is there is surely a way for the system to give me some feedback where I’m not running to the forum every time I have a question about what happened in the workout. We all know that things we do outside of training can have a big impact on what our training looks like - nutrition, sleep, overall recovery, and apparently quick bathroom breaks in zone 1. It’s a little frustrating to come on the forum and just hear “Stick to the training plan and just let the AI guide you” when it’s more complicated than that.

Not arguing any of what you said, just pointing out that according to the pic, it says it WAS due to the bathroom break.

Which score? Because in the threshold workout, the threshold levels went up, and went up by more than were planned. And if that particular break is worth -2w of FTP increase, that’s WILD. WILD.

I’ll take a look and let you know what I find. Is this a good place to share?

IMO that break should not affect the ftp prediction at all, no idea why you would be punished with -2w for a short bit of missing endurance.

Yep!

Yes. I addressed this. I’m asking for clarity because that’s certainly incredibly vague.

Yeah, like I said, no argument. Just replying with clarity as above.

I think you got dinged two watts for answering very hard and not the break. Your future workouts are adjusted because of that response and as a result won’t push you for those extra two watts.

That’s what I’ve seen from end on threshold workouts and about the same drop I get depending on where I am in the plan. The plan isn’t going to push you as hard because you are being pushed harder now than it thinks you should have been.

I’ve definitely seen that before. However, I did rate it as just Hard. I think if I had rated it as Very Hard, I would have seen a bigger drop, as that’s something I’ve definitely had happen.

How’s your Heart Rate compare to other Hard rides?

This being the first or second workout in the cycle I wouldn’t worry about the AIFTP Prediction just yet.
There’s still so much that can change from now to day 28.
Someone said that the AIFTP Prediction was like weather prediction, the closer you get to the end date the more accurate that is becomes.

Comparable. It’s a little harder to nail down because the intervals are longer here with higher percentages of that time versus something like Cloudripper, and those are the ones that really jack the heart rate high.

Right. I’m not worried about the AI prediction itself. I get it that it’s gonna change. And I’m going to probably get that increase back as I progress through the month. What I’m asking for is a little more information about why it went down, because if it’s something I can do outside of training to help it, that’s going to make everything even more effective.

I don’t think OP cares about the change, they’re requesting/hoping that TR can in the future provide context about changes.

I also think it would be cool if it could provide a bit of feedback along the lines of “Your HR was higher than previous efforts are you resting and fueling correctly” or similar.

I agree, it would be cool to see, but can you imagine the posting storm it would create? I’m not sure the forum could survive the blowback!

Oh lord. The storm would break the forum and all the support team’s will to live!

I’m just getting back to this one this morning, but there’s something that I think keeps getting missed that we all need to keep in mind.

Before TrainerRoad AI, we showed you pending adaptations that you could accept or reject. If we had to change workouts based on changes in your training (adding, moving, skipping a workout, unexpected performance, etc., etc.), we would let you know. Oftentimes, there were a dozen or even more workouts that adapted.

We are still changing the workouts that are in your AI Window; we just don’t prompt you each time since it happens often.

When your prediction changes after completing a workout, it’s usually not that one workout that has made such a great impact on your prediction (that would be wild and worthy of the outrage we’ve been seeing), but rather it’s the changes to multiple (again sometimes 10+) workouts between now and your next prediction that causes the difference.

One workout won’t make or break your FTP, but changing 10 can.

@silock I can see that a handful of your workouts changed after completing Bounty, but I’m just checking all the work to see if there’s anything unique that needs further discussion. I don’t expect that to be the case, but I don’t ever rule anything out until it’s been verified.

Hang in there!
