Looking for cooling fan recommendations

Im from DK - And i would like to get some kind of fan like the Lasko - does anyone know how to? Doesnt seem to be shipping to DK

Look for any carpet dryer blower-type fan. You’ll have to adjust/fine tune the angle by placing books or similar under the fan, so not as adjustable as the lasko. But the airstream from these kinds of fans is very strong.

Cleva UK ships worldwide if you order by email.

I was just hunting to see if you could attach an exterior hose to pull air into these type of fans from outside or another room. My garage is warm in summer afternoons, but my pain cave is just feet from a door to the air conditioned interior of my home and it has a small cat door. Would a setup like this work to pull the interior air to the fan? What is the ducting? Thanks!

I have 2 solutions in use.

  1. The top fan has a cardboard box with an opening on the fan side and one on the window side, snug fit between both that allows air from the outside window directly to the fan.
  2. I’m using some simple vinyl duct. I got one box, cut it in half and have it as a side vacuum pull from the cardboard box on top. I also made a louver that controls the opening so I can meter the flow from the ducts to me.

I would prefer to have the ducting lead right to the fan intake, but I didn’t have room for that option

The setup allows me to control the total amount of cooling to match temp ranges. I can have it in use even in the coldest winter up to cool temps. I don’t use it at all when the home air conditioning is in use as the outside temps are too high.

Overall, it works really well for a redneck engineer solution.

Hard to see how that top one works. But these fans pull from the side? So if I’d need to enclose the side with a box essentially and then run a hose to the box?

Yup, one side of the fan is the actual inlet for the air flow. A small box around that opening with the hoses run to it should work well.

I recommend using the largest hose (or coupled smaller hoses) that you can. This can help prevent air flow restriction into the fan, that will result in lower flow out to you, which is not good.

The cat door the people before us build in between the interior and our garage was annoying, but I think I’m about to make it useful for me. I’ll report back on my RNE project.

I thought I’d add to this thread vs starting a new one. I bought an electric leaf blower this week - for actually blowing leaves, but naturally, I immediately thought about cooling on the bike :dash::man_biking:

This thing is unbelievable. At 2 feet from the nozzle, I measured 67mph, and that’s the highest my wind speed gauge would go.

At 5 feet from the nozzle, the airstream is sufficiently spread out where it hits the full upper body. It puts my Lasko to shame - probably 2-3x more powerful.

So for heavy sweaters out there - try a leaf blower! (Just kidding, it’s really loud).

Help. In the market but, confused about CFMs…What am I missing:

20" Patton high velocity says up to a CFM of 2218. The referenced Lasko fans are under 400 CFM; Air King is 310. Are CFMs sort of like TSS? Not equal?

Some CFMs are just flat out wrong. Usually overstated.

And if the CFMs are actually right, yes, not all CFMs are created equal. CFM from a blower style fan like the Lasko is in a lot more focused airstream, so better for cooling on the bike. Whereas CFM from an axial fan tends to blow all over the place.

@DaveWh thank you!

Hi All,

After listening to this morning’s podcast I’m sold on purchasing a Lasko fan. The only problem is that I’m located in Australia (delivery isn’t an issue). I’m assuming the only consideration I would need to make is to have an international adapter for the power cord?

Thanks

If you buy from the US, the fans are designed to run on 120V. So you’ll need a 230 to 120V transformer, in addition to a plug adapter. I think the fan may also blow a little slower due to the frequency in Aus being 50 Hz vs 60 Hz in the US.

Thanks a bunch mate! That sounds like it’s getting to the point of being too difficult and I should probably just save up for the Kickr Headwind

Can’t you search on “blower fan” or “carpet drier fan” in OZ and see what is available there already?

There’s no magic to them really, and you can make just about any of them work.

All you need is a cereal box to make them perfect. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Wahoo headwind. Simple, effective (makes me cold at times for someone who is a very heavy sweater), easy to control during workout with smart phone. Downside - expensive. But I don’t regret my purchase at all.

You can buy carpet blowers here in Aus.

I use a 700mm industrial fan, it is great.(albeit loud)
