Holy cow! That’s crazy. I had no idea you are basically tracked 24/7
Most keep food logs as well just in case they get a false positive or can make a case on contamination, which can happen.
I remember Phil Gaimon saying he wouldn’t take food from strangers, including cookies, because he just didn’t know where it was coming from and was afraid of getting dinged on a test.
Yeah, pretty much. Without checking I think there’s a time slot where the testers turn up and you need to be there so if you nip out to the local shop to get some milk it’s not a problem, i.e. they’ll wait 20-30 minutes. Certainly not the parcel delivery driver: I pressed the doorbell and no-one answered inside 2 nanoseconds so I assumed they weren’t in; type excuse!
You’d think a 24/7 gps tracking link of his exact location would be good enough. Heck, I’d bet WADA would prefer that for all athletes.
Slight privacy concerns in (most) western democracies
For the long distance events that I do I’ve a SPOT tracker, occasionally it throws a wobbly and misplaces me, sometimes it simply stops transmitting. Plus if you are indoors or without a view of the sky things can go awry.
Obviously technology improves and becomes more reliable but it is another thing to go wrong.
IIRC Alex Dowsett said in one of his videos that they have an app on their smartphone to update their whereabouts, however I don’t remember if it uses GPS and I’m sure it isn’t a 24/7 thing.
For the UK specifically
Is Lachlan riding through the night into Paris?!
He’s a nutter.
Edit: Yep. About 5hrs to go at his current pace.
Looks like Rapha and/or EF might go live on IG when he gets in/close to Paris? They have a countdown going
On the Champs. In sandals. What else did I expect?
Time to pay up
Rapha going live on IG any minute now for Lachlan’s finish
Come on EF, killing me with the suspense!
Announcing he’s going to go back out and do it again because yolo.
Looks like they reset it, probably due to that flat plus actually knowing when he’ll finish. Should be around 45 more minutes now.
He probably just wants to sleep in a real bed at this point.
Dude. Ride it
backwards
Well he did it. Kick ass
Rapha has a little footage on IG. Looks like he drew a nice little crowd to ride him home. Going to be an epic Gone Racing.
The withdrawals have already started
It was a bit emotional watching him finish; feels a little bit like we were watching a tiny piece of history get made.
Or like a brief moment where we get to go backwards in time and see what it was like in the very beginnings of the sport.
Either way, it’s quiet but special moment for cycling.
I feel like ten people watching him spray champagne at like 6am local time was very fitting to this.
