Actually, USAC is a cycling governing body in the US, not the exclusive only governing body. There isn’t a law in the US, at least that I’m aware of, that gives USAC a legal monopoly as the only cycling governing body in the US. If there is, then I’m wrong with the rest of this post.
VC is a national champion under the rules of WUCA. This is no different than the situation in boxing (see below taken from Wikipedia) which has multiple professional boxing sanctioning authorities. And there can be the multiple simulataneous US / World title holders. You just need to identify which body granted your title.
Now you may think that WUCA is a mickey mouse organization akin to the AlphaDogCycling Association which grants US titles based on the fastest times on the Tie a Knot around the Sundial CW segment. But if I could get enough $$$$$$$ to given large prize purses for this, I could legatimize my sanctioning body. But WUCA is a sanctioning body. Up to you if you want to recognize it or not. But titles from WUCA don’t give you any of the benefits of a USAC / UCI / IOC sanctioned title. Up to you if you care about that or not, or think that USAC / UCI / IOC is a positive or negative.
In boxing you can unify all belts because the associations will simultaneously govern a single fight, as a unified title is in their financial interest. If at some point WUCA got big enough, and Ultra got popular enough (like gravel), then maybe you could have a USAC / WUCA unified title. But today, why would USAC lend WUCA its credibility (I can’t think of a better word at the moment) by jointly granting a title based on a single race. Especially as Ultra is a niche within the larger niche of cycling in the US.
saw another youtube vid where he was interviewed on the Chris Miller Show and he mentioned it but quickly followed up that it was only 1 other person and was sorta dismissive about the championship himself (not of his immense effort to actually compete and do well in the event - even though it was uncompetitive)
he’s super interesting and has a great voice to our hobby.
now that I look at that instagram post again up in post 2, it wasn’t HIM flaunting the national championship? somebody else was using him to promote some event and THEY were flaunting it.
I’ve heard him mention it twice now and he was not bragging about it at all. (meaning not bragging about actual title…not his fitness or accomplishment).
this was a little long but pretty interesting throughout.
Well he didn’t “three-peat”… The new “champion” emerged victorious from the field of three people…
Somewhat related, I got a kick out of this from the promoter in congratulating someone from their Voyager field(aka self supported, two participants in the category)… “World Ultra-Cycling Association North American Solo Self-Supported Champion!”. Thats a new one to me…
Finished with 246.0 miles in in 11 hours 26 minutes(was shortened by 30 minutes due to unsafe riding conditions.) 5,300 feet of elevation gain and 8k calories
That would have got you 26th in the UK National 12hr time trial championships this year. Shows that world championships needs to be taken with a healthy pinch of salt.
