IQ2 Power Meter

Looks good. God I hope they decide to do an MTB pedal. That would be an auto buy for me

They are supposedly doing two pedal based meters now, a Keo based road pedal and a SPD compatible mountain pedal more that the pedal independent module is a no-go

Yeah, but I thought that it was still up in the air as to which one they would do (spd vs keo). They sent a survey but I haven’t heard much in the way of results

I understand that are doing both and the survey that everyone is so worked up about is just to gauge the mix of road to mtb in the first production run.

Ah ok. That clarifies things.

A lot of people were thinking the ā€œsurveyā€ was their choice for their KS/IGG perk when it was intended to be a straw poll. Given the delays and the change in design unrealistic expectations of a crowdfunded project, the are are a lot of angry ā€œinternet outrageā€ types. In some cases it is justified, but in the end it is a crowdfunded project and it could have simply folded. At least it looks like something usable will come out of it.

Well it makes sense. It does feel like a bait and switch. But they made it really clear through out that this was a crowdfunding campaign and there are risks associated with that. If anything, I think IQ should have been much more communicative in general. I think people would have responded well if they tried a more social media approach to development. Wintergattan and the Marble Machine construction approach comes to mind.

As someone who just waited to see, really glad I didn’t go in head first though.

That’s fair, their communication had been less than stellar for sure but I think they really were trying to make it work but they ran into essentially an unsolvable issue so they chose to develop ā€œsomethingā€ usable rather than shutting it down. I’m ok with the solution but I get how some aren’t but at the same time that’s the risk of crowdfunding. They could have kept chasing the original design, pissed away all the money, and produce nothing as per crowdfunding and that would have all within the realm of possibility of KS/IGG

I guess I’m an outlier in that having a PM isn’t that high a priority so all the shenanigans along the way doesn’t impact me all that much. I sold my SRM for a bottle of scotch lol. I will be satisfied if I get a working device and am not bent out of shape with Keo Vs SPD-SL (they are all pedals to me) so I am willing to cut them more slack than many others. I am also willing to accept that a crowdfunded project could fail and end up with nothing.

After thirty years in high tech, I won’t debate that there many things they could have done better but at the same time the are a number of R&D things that occurred that were of no surprise to me at all but others don’t understand.

I hope that was a nice bottle of scotch.

Decent but not extravagant, it was an original SRM crank and PC-V. Interesting data but not up to today’s integration

Did anyone get their email on which pedals to choose? Their media guy Kenneth Perry said that they are on schedule to deliver in August.

I followed this with some distance since its inception. I’m sure many those who backed it are apathetic, angry, or have just plain forgotten about it by this point, but props to them for not just folding after the first major hurdle. Once they ship and they’ve got some in-the-field testing, where QC will come into play, I’d definitely order some for their price.

I would be shocked if they deliver anything this year. Even more surprised if they deliver anything in August. To deliver this month means that they already have a bunch or people testing and riding prototypes. And I’d be surprised if that is the case.

I’ve honestly no idea why they keep on setting themselves these unattainable deadlines and dooming themselves to failure. I’d have had so much more confidence in the product if when they announced they were switching to pedals they set the delivery date to a year after the switch.

I’ve been very defensive of them so far, largely because I recognise what you’re doing when you back a Kickstarter (i.e. not buying a product, but funding a project), but I’m starting to worry a bit about their blind optimism.

They haven’t even sent the forms out to choose your pedals yet, how can they be on track to ship in the next 21 days?

Overpromising and underdelivering seem to be part of the crowd-funding DNA. It’s gotten as bad as used car salesmen

I also believe that in line with the unrealistic KS/IGG thinking, everyone thinks that they are going to be shipping everything all at once when it will be in waves starting with the first KS backers. I’d guess the first shipment will be less than 100 units. It’ll take a couple of months once they actually start shipping to get through KS backers first, then IGG backers, and then web orders.

There’s a new vocabulary that’s been invented by crowd-funded companies - as in:
ā€œWe’re excited to have received our first prototypes!!!ā€ = We got them, and the first 5 we powered burned into small balls of plastic.
ā€œAfter a few minor changes, we will be getting our first production batch!ā€ = We’re scrapping this lot before it takes the building down.
ā€œWe now have our first production batch, and the tests are very encouraging!ā€ = They didn’t catch fire (yet). That’s a good thing, we ran out of fire extinguishers on the previous lot.
ā€œWe are about to ship our first unitā€¦ā€ = We have one unit assembled that sort of works, with a lot of soldered wires, tie wraps and duct tape blended in.

Speak of the devil, they’ve gone an released another update:

Hi everyone,

We’d like to send you all a quick update right before the weekend. SMD Sensors is preparing the axles and our other production partners are currently working on the first batch of mass-produced components. Our own assembly line is being prepared in The Netherlands, so that we’ll be ready to go once all the parts get in. Tests are consistently looking good!

We’ve been integrating our backer and pre-order customer databases in preparation for delivery. Our next update will contain more details on that, as we’ll be reaching out to all of you individually to obtain your accurate shipping address and choice of power meter.

Have a nice weekend!

Team iQsquare

Doesn’t score too high on the above bingo board, but also isn’t very committal. None of that sounds like a company on the verge of shipping to me though.

Including that one critical part with a 26-week lead-time, which we ordered yesterday.
