It also includes a taper at the end so you’ll get some recovery and be able to do the whole thing again.
Is there a way to accommodate an extended break in the Plan Builder. My situation concerns my sons training for the year. Will be building a plan for 2020 for his cX season. However, we know from previous years he can not effectively train on the bike during his Cross Country season, so this year we were planning on shutting down the bike training during Cross Country and mainly just working on cX bike skills during this period, then picking back up bike training once CC season is over and do the cX speciality plan leading into cX season. Could see this being helpful for others who might have vacations, etc. to plug in.
Three questions
- Is there a way to change the volume as the season progresses? It seems to stick on one volume all the way through.
- Is there a way to save the draft plan before committing. or do I have to re-input teh A races and start again each time I come back to thinking through the programme
- I am doing short and very long Time trials 50 & 100 miles and possibly 12 hrs. However I am looking at the 40kTT option when the plan is built which is not really adequate (given my experience of racing last year). What can i do about how I enter my A events to make this a sensible plan?
Thanks
Sorry if mentioned before, I can’t see wood for trees amongst over 600 comments. It would really help if there was a summary of the key pieces somewhere, a guide to inputting your season and designing it, but not sure where to look.
Cheers
We’re working on vacations. If you’re doing an extended stop like that I would just have the plan stop before it, take the time off, then apply a new plan.
- Yes, you can expand your plan and change the volume for each block.
- No
- I would do century for 50 and 100 mile TTs.
Okay sounds good. Any recommendations for how to build the first plan. It works out perfectly that he will have 8-weeks between the end of his Cross Country (running) season and cX Nationals.
So should the first plan before Cross Country season be built as if his cX “A” Race is the date of his CC season start so that his First plan finishes with cX Specialty. Then after CC Season jump back in and do another full 8-weeks of cX Specialty.
EXAMPLE:
- 1st Plan - Plan Builder for cX “A” Race set for the date CC Season Starts
- CC Season - Work on cX Bike Skills
- 2nd Plan - 8-week cX Specialty with Nationals set as “A” Race and include weekend races in the plan as B Races.
NOTE: If I just build an 8-week Plan for a lead up to a cX “A” Race, Plan Builder suggest.
- 6 WKS SSB I
- 3 WKS SSB II
- 1 WK cX Speciality
BONUS QUESTION:
Would you anticipate any loss in bike fitness (FTP) after CC season? We always see a benefit in the running sections of his races ![]()
Slight clarification on @Nate_Pearson’s “No” to #2: once any events are on your calendar, they stay on your calendar. So if you redo Plan Builder, it will ask you if you want to include existing events. So you can easily redo your plan ad infinitum without having to re-add events.
I’ve been doing this as I’ve been playing with different settings to see what Plan Builder would give me.
Cheers Nate.
This would be phenomenal.
It’s going to turn up the business intelligence up a few notches, but if you could specify some rules in advance (ie. can’t do more than 90min during week, but can do 3+hrs on weekend) potentially those of us being given HV plans will see weekday rides subbed down to -1/-2 varients, and weekend rides extended to +1/+2 to make up the difference.
Is there an ETA/DeadLine for when this should be released for Vaction block offs? (Yea Im calling it that) are there currently any work around for this now?
Also I mentioned a couple days ago about changing the plan at the beginning to allow you the option of base vs build to start with, was there any updates on this and if not is there a reason why the plan builder is set to start from base? Im almost done with base and honestly would like to start build if that’s cool but doing the PB takes you back to the beginning base and I was getting excited to start on build!
Thanks for all that you do great forum and product all around! look forward to using this feat!
You can start the new plan in the past to take this into account. Simply start the plan 12 weeks early if you’re coming out of SSB1/2.
I tried this the other day and Plan Builder picks up where you left off (without adding workouts in the past). Your current SSB1/2 workouts will remain unchanged and you’ll start with a base phase.
Hi
I was playing around with the plan builder for preparation for ironman Lanzarote in May - I assumed I was going to do long distance Tri base extended for a couple more weeks then build extended for a couple of weeks and then specialty - however the plan builder suggests something like 8wks base 8wks build and back to 8wks base and then to specialty.
Any thoughts - do I assume the plan builder is better?
Cheers
Simon
Update:
Redid the ramp test this morning and got a 12% bump in FTP so delighted with that. Thanks TR🤛
So I started my plan from 8th October as I’ve already done Base I and Base II. The plan builder worked out a plan which has base 1, build 1, then base 2. The last week of the build block is this week, so I do a ramp test, do the last week of build, and then go into another ramp test next week, and back to Base II.
This feels like it needs to take better account of what’s already been done and move the build block. If I start the plan from today, I get to repeat base I and base II. Maybe I’ll try a start date of 6 weeks ago with settings otherwise unchanged.
Edit: That gives me one week of build this week then repeat base II, then return to build for the full 8 week plan.
This is a really cool looking feature! I just tried it out, and my A race at the end of the season is a 7-day stage race. When I input that into the tools it ended up making my last week a recovery week - but put all the workouts right on top of my Stage Race days … I would have expected it to put them the week before the race?

Stage race support still seems to be a bit broken. I’ve worked around this by putting multi-day events as consecutive single races which seems to have worked. For the last event, which is my A event (1000km) I’ve just put a single race as you have to have 8 weeks gap between A races.
Another feature request…can the custom plans and associated workouts be colour coded? I’m experimenting with my upcoming season by creating different versions of custom plans and adding them to my calendar. The problem is, I can’t tell what workout belongs to which plan. Having a coloured border around each workout corresponding to its parent plan would make analysis much easier.
No ETA. We’re working on the logic now. The vacation block release will be a function of how quickly we can reduce confusion and eliminate bugs with this upcoming release
This is out now. You can set your plan start date to be in the past. If you go back far enough it will have you start with build.
Those taper/open workouts should be the same week leading up to your race.
Looking at your TSS chart above you might want to do more volume leading up to that race. That’s a BIG jump in TSS!.
