šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰ Introducing Outside Workouts! šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰

Thought: How about adding audio feedback at the start of each interval so that I can start the workout in TR put my phone in my jersey pocket and my earbud(s) in. Start riding and wait for Chad to tell me what to do?

Would personally like this feature as well for indoor rides. Even to get some additional information by audio instead of just text on the screen.

That should already be in place. I know it is on the PC/Mac app, and assumed it was in place on the mobile as well.

There are a series of beeps that sound (3 tmies?) about 3 seconds prior to each interval start, and then again at the final 3 seconds at the end of each interval.

Here is the related setting on Android mobile.

Right, as I said, it must be associated with other info and learned. There’s nothing automatic and it suffers issues with variability for so many reasons. But for those people who lack power data outside, it is about the best option available, and worth learning for outside training and racing needs.

Love the continued innovation on @Nate_Pearson and team. Love the general description but any chance of printable queue cards? This is what I’ve been making in Excel lately and it helps me learn the workout (usually tonths point I don’t even look at it). To me x minutes at x Watts vs general descriptions is easier to learn and folllow. I sort of enjoy thinking about the right segments for each workout outside, I may check what the outdoor thought is but still use the original from time to time. Thanks again for the awesome product and continued development.

Thanks for your reply Chad! I know these beeps, and have them turned on as well.

I meant an actual voice telling what interval is coming up. Something like this:

  • ā€œStart your 10 minute sweet spot interval at 88% FTP in 3…2…1…GO!ā€
  • ā€œTime for 5 minutes recovery at 94 watts.ā€

On checking future Saturday rides and ā€œBig Mountainā€ on Full Distance Triathlon Base it does not have an Outdoor equivalent… and I would prefer not to do 3hr on the trainer.

Can you confirm if there should be an outdoor equivalent?

Stuart

If you’re totally happy with what you do today then by all means keep doing it . The only thing I’d say is for the aerobic outside rides I’d do the outside version unless you can really ride outside and pedal the entire time and not let the power drop.

I don’t know what paper the organizers used, but I did a granfondo and got a sticker label with cues, might have to print up some templates to manually write in cues.

We probably won’t do a printable cue card anytime soon unless there’s a big ask for it.

There should be and we’re working on fixing that. Thanks for reporting it.

As in the threads/requests asking for verbal instructions (in addition to the text instructions) of the workouts, that would be a tremendous undertaking, and very time consuming. It could be less than the pure instructional text, as many of the interval prompts could be standardized, but it would still take a ton of work and time. I don’t see it as being as beneficial when compared to other options that we hope are coming (head unit integration).

Hi - On review of my calendar there a few of the longer rides under the build phase as well that don’t have alternative outdoor rides

…and then you’d have internationalisation to deal with :grimacing:

I’ve not tried this myself, but I wonder if the built-in screenreader on a mobile device would announce the text intervals? Depends how it’s surfaced within the app.

I’m willing to be convinced either way, I’m just summarising my understanding of the TR position.

There’s lots of other factors - full body cooling from wind is different from a fan, bike skills, bike movement, body movement…I don’t know what the full list is, but I think we agree it’s significantly different.

What I’m not sure about is your example, if I pootle about traffic lights etc interrupting, then get a couple of straight 20min@275W, is it really a significant difference in physiological adaptations I will get?

I’m willing to give TR the benefit of the doubt though. My outdoor power files are just a load of zig zags whether I’m just popping to the shops or racing Ironman.

@BespokeBarry
see this. Hands-on: The AIRhub Pro Resistance Wheel | DC Rainmaker
Airhub would be neat for that, but in addition to all the equipment we already have, one more gadget… that is getting expensive ;))

I already simulate these kind of rides outside, if its the same period of time, same TSS, the majority in the same zones, with little if anything in the threshold/vo2/anaerobic zones, I’d say it’s near enough. I’m looking forward with trepidation as to the TR alternative.

This is very interesting, you’re saying you can do the workouts on a Elemnt.
Interested in a review.

I’m curious about what will show up in TR Calendar after a structured outdoor workout has been completed? The map of unstructured outdoor rides from Strava or the Thumbnail of the TR workout?

I’m excited about the new feature but am really wanting integration with head units. However I do believe this had to be done first and is a great first step. Great work TrainerRoad team!

It appears that the TR outside workout links/associates with the imported data.

  • See two possible examples from Jonathan’s calendar.
  • Not sure about the (Modified) one on there?

I am interested to see how workouts like Hawk’s bill, bear, and Huxley can be done or adjusted for outdoors.

This is a super cool feature, thanks TR!
