šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰ Introducing Outside Workouts! šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰

Hi Nate.
Could you get some estimate from Wahoo regarding when this can be implemented?
I understand that it may be in their hands, but now we’ve missed one summer window, if another outside season would pass it would be very frustrating for the Wahoo users here.

Just a little bit of feedback.
I really love this feature, it makes me push myself to see the timer outside.
I ride a mostly flat 10km course with few cars and a Garmin Varia radar, works great.
Also I get a 30min warmup / cooldown on the way to the course.

It may be announced at Eurobike, Wahoo announced something big is coming.

I’m sorry but I don’t know when it will launch :frowning:.

Tried to find some rumors from Eurobike, and it looks like Wahoo did something already in their latest update. CyclingTips claims that the update 26th of August has added an option, though Wahoo does not mention this in their update notes. Anyone updated their Elemnt?

CyclingTips.com:
The new firmware update also introduces the option of TrainerRoad Outdoor Workouts, which allow you to substitute an outside equivalent for your scheduled indoor TrainerRoad workout. According to Wahoo, TrainerRoad will also soon join the likes of Today’s Plan and Training Peaks in allowing its users to seamlessly sync their workouts to their Wahoo Elemnt unit – a feature that is not available just yet.

According to Ray Maker (DC Rainmaker):

TRAINERROAD OUTSIDE INTEGRATION COMING: (…) Starting in September, Wahoo devices will support integration with TrainerRoad workouts. (…) I haven’t seen this feature yet in beta, so I can’t give you any detailed specifics of how it works, but Wahoo’s saying it should basically match the existing functionality, just simply expanded to TrainerRoad. (…)

I’d also suggest a launch at Eurobike for this feature alongside something big (new colors for your Aeromount maybe)

Almost there, Wahoo folks!

:joy:

I’ll talk to the Wahoo CEO in a couple days when I see him at eurobike and see if everything is still on track for a launch this month.

Please let him know this plus Varia support saved at least one Garmin defection :grinning:. Bolt is so awesomely stable and trouble free that I really didn’t want to risk the Garmin head unit, but am so tired of making workouts in training peaks!

@Nate_Pearson love the outdoor workouts as you know from previous posts from me via my garmin units. I doubt there are any plans but is it possible to put in a feature request to build out your tri plans in a similar fashion?

For example the swimming and running workouts would be prebuilt in the plans and you would have the option to sync them over to your watch (like cycling now) and then follow the workout. I know I can build them in GC but would be pretty cool and convenient.

Another outdoor workout bug, this time in Broken Finger: In the first part of interval sets, the last interval in each set should be 2 minutes instead of 3, and after each 5 minute break between the sets there is a 5 minute interval at above FTP which should not be there…

 I had that last weekend – caught me out the first time

Yes, down the line but it’s not scheduled at the moment.

Today I rode my first outdoor workout. I’m trying to integrate some heat training, but did not want to double dip and do an indoor ride, then go out and suffer in the heat. The workout steps worked flawlessly. Found a great climb that I could do my intervals (Stevens +3) and hold power without too many fluctuations. My questions are this:
Since I’m on a hill and trying to keep power, I’m not able to keep an high cadence. My average was 70 rpm, which might be good as I’m training for Stelvio Haute Route (starts in 2 weeks). Is keeping a steady 70 rpm cadence OK as I’m hitting my target power in a constant manner?

2nd question is the cool down…I figured after my last interval, I would ride down the hill and home, which is mostly downhill. What I seem to remember was that after the cool down period, which I think was five minutes, maybe less, I got the prompt on my Garmin Edge 520 to save the ride. So I did, but now I still had another 10 minutes to ride home. I just started an new ride and basically had two rides for the day. My question is, how to I add a long cool down and not have separate rides?

That is fine if it fits within your goals. If that hill training and related cadence are something you expect to need and use, it makes sense to use it in training.

That said, were you at the lowest gearing on your bike on those hills?

  • If not, shift down until you get a quicker cadence.
  • If so, you may want to consider different gearing, if you have a desire to have faster cadence in similar situations in the future.

Thanks for the quick reply coach!!

Sadly I was in my lowest gear, running a compact crank with 11/32 cassette. I was on a 10% average grade, so it’s in line with what I’m training for. I believe the HR climbs are averaging about those percentages (Stelvio, Mortirolo, Gavia) if not more…so it is in line with what I’ve been training on, inside and outside.

Sounds like you are set for the goal then. I did similar work to prep for my big hill ride last year and it worked well to get me where I wanted to be. Good luck.

FYI, I am just Chad McNeese, a forum moderator. Coach Chad Timmerman is @ Chad (without the space) on the forum.

Perfect! Thanks Chad!

Definitely big kudos to the development group as far as how the layout on the workout is outside. I’ve been a bit hesitant doing the outside and have done a double dip in one day previously. That was a bit painful as it was a tough indoor ride, then a pretty hard climb later in the day…legs were shot.
Anyway, it’s nice to stay on plan and take it outside, where really the weather is pretty nice 98% of the time.

If you have a FR945, can you follow a route (w/ maps) and do a TR outdoor workout simultaneously? I saw that its possible to do this with an Edge 530, but not sure if it also works on the watches that have maps?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. If not, please correct me :).

I’ve bought a 4iiii Precision powermeter for my road bike and now i can do the workouts outside with the TR app on my phone. Unfortunately, the TR app doesn’t record GPS data.
Is there a way to do the TR workout outside on my phone, and still get the GPS data for things like strava? Or do i need to buy a Edge for this?
