🎉 🎉 🎉 Introducing Adaptive Training! 🎉 🎉 🎉

Email TR support or fill out the support form.

So I had kind of had a soft rollout on some youtube content last week, where I shared a walkthrough video of adaptive training on my own current plan SSB1 HV. It seemed pretty well received so I’m going more public with it. This is the week 2 video where I show what I did this past week, how it changed throughout the week, and where my training is going this week. I’m not super big on being an influencer, but if folks like it I’d appreciate likes in order to help other people see this and learn how adaptive training is working on a real person. Plus, if this stuff is well received I’ll put in more effort with production quality, right now I’m just using a cheap headset mic and using OBS to just do screen display!

As long as you are consistent in how you respond, it will adjust appropriately. If you think about it logically, it will continue to adjust the bounds of too hard and too easy until it finds the right difficulty and progresses you from there. Also, as @tberkmeier noted, if those workouts were all out for you, that probably does mean that your level is lower than you think (and to some degree, you’ll need to surrender yourself to that). The way I see it, there’s nothing wrong with dropping down and ramping up. Whereas going too hard can blow you out and lead to overtraining. One of them keeps you progressing and the other can force you off the bike or ruin a season.

As for load and all that, Nate did mention that TSS will be variable week to week (even lower in some cases) while still progressing your levels appropriately. He said it broke people’s brains internally at TR because even with reduced TSS, they actually saw improvements. That’s going to be a massive learning curve for everybody once they get access to AT, and I think TR has a huge uphill battle in terms of educating people about it. It appears to me on the face to fly pretty directly into the face of traditional training methodologies in terms of training load and TSS.

Well, I’ve definitely been at the point where I’ve spent all day dreading the session I have to do, so I’d be happy enough to never have to do that again. I think right now I’d like to see a bunch more transparency on why it’s making certain decisions relating to my plan, and I’d also like to understand the thinking behind not showing my actual levels when I’ve dropped in one of them.

I think to some degree you will get answers and in other areas you won’t due to them protecting their IP. I think to make the most out of AT, you kinda have to just relinquish control and do what it says. A lot of people won’t like that or will struggle with it, and i think for them, AT will not be something they want, like or enjoy.

I think eventually I’d probably stop using the AT aspect, and tweak manually based on the newly visible workout levels.

Basically what I’ve done in the past (tweaking my plan when I start to struggle), but a lot more accurately as I now know exactly how hard each session is supposed to be, rather than trying to calculate based on IF / TSS.

@bnied Is there a regular cadence that you plan to update the list of known issues and number of users with beta access or will it be done on more of an ad hoc basis? Just trying to figure out how routinely I need to be checking back.

I’ve been using AT for 2 weeks now, and I’m pretty happy with how it has adapted my training. I think a lot of people here don’t like the idea of not being in control so they start tinkering and changing things, instead of trusting the system.

As of now it’s been great.

We’ll likely update weekly for standard updates, and on an ad hoc basis for any major updates that are released.

It is fantastic that you’re updating the parent post. That is gold.

Just to confirm what others have noted, outdoor workouts on Garmin head units do work with AT. This weekend I ignored my 2 scheduled sweetspot workouts. Saturday I went on a “lively” small group ride and did not attempt to link it to a workout.

Sunday I put in an endurance workout in place of the scheduled workout and downloaded the outside version to my Garmin 520+. Despite my best efforts to screw it up by pressing the lap button in all the wrong places, it looks like it recognized and categorized it properly.

Net result (as expected): endurance progression level increased, SS did not. The Saturday ride was way harder, way more fun, and probably way more effective than Sunday, so really looking forward to AT being able to do something with unstructured rides.

Unfortunately AT has been pretty much useless for me on it’s current form. Almost all of my training has been outside with a wahoo so no levels are adjusting. I’m totally cool with this as I know it’s BETA and not a final product. I also know how to get myself fit, so it’s not like I’m relying on the information.

I’m just giving a little context for folks waiting to get the BETA and possibly in a situation like me, where the majority of their riding is outside with a wahoo.

That’s unfortunate. It’s a shame that you can’t give your Beta access to someone else until they’ve sorted the Wahoo issue.

Hopefully the Wahoo techs and TR techs will have a solution soon for you.

No, they need people like me for the BETA! I’m a distinct user that will help them with testing/development for a better final product.

I don’t for a second mean you shouldn’t be in the Beta. Just that you’re not currently testing other aspects of it that maybe someone else might?

With more than 300 people currently in the beta, I think they’ve got a lot of perspectives covered. They are one among many. I’m sure once the Wahoo workouts start working with the beta, @Bones will be a great case study for TR to see how it operates when pulling in such a vast number of outdoor workouts at once. Meanwhile, my experience doing a hybrid style (weekdays indoors, weekend outside) provides a different perspective when the fix is implemented. They need outliers just as much as people who are middle of the road.

Sure, I see where you’re coming from, but I’m a valuable test user for them in terms of bugs, and in particular when they fix the wahoo issue. Im sure once they fix the wahoo issue they will want to see if the rides were recognized correctly (assuming they do a retroactive implementation).

Ive also sent them emails about a couple other things I’ve noted when doing indoor outdoor rides a couple of weeks ago that didn’t look right.

Anyway, the purpose of my post was more geared toward folks really wanting to be on the beta in a similar situation as me, and to just let them know waiting isn’t so bad either if they were looking for a workable product right away.

This is by no means a complaint in any way.

Awesome to see 200+ more in!

Less awesome - I’m still not one of them!

Envy is increasing…

I have a V02 workout coming up in my calendar which is labelled ‘not recommended’. I have no pending changes to my training plan. Is this a mistake? Last week I failed to get through a similar workout that had 4 min intervals and this week has 5 min at the same power. Should TR have dialled it down for me or should I manually choose an easier workout?
