I envy you!! If I wear crap bibs for 20 minutes it kills me.
Another thing⦠I see people wearing jerseys on the trainer. I ask WHY??? Is it for the picture and then you take it off? All I wear is the bib. No jersey. Helps so much with cooling.
Also, good point some of you have made with wearing your top stuff on the trainer and then retiring it to road. Like many others, I have done the opposite in the past. But I have realized that I spend so much time on the trainer, why waste my good bibs for only road duty? In any case, I mostly wear team kit when out with the guys anyways so I have started to use my good stuff indoors and I do not regret it.
I donāt wear a top either but some folk have said they wear one to mop up sweat, surely they make you sweat more ![]()
agreed. I know some new materials āwickā sweat and all of that stuff. And I would agree that some are pretty good. But that doesnāt mean they are better than bare skin. We wear clothes for protection and to comply with social norms. Indoors, I donāt have the sun beating on my skin, I donāt have to worry about crashing (I hope), I dont need pockets because I have a table right in front of me.
Iād love to see some science that says you have better cooling with a layer over your skin.
I can, however, see an argument for using a jersey or something else for heat training or something like this, or testing a jerseyās fit, etc. All good. But for pure performance, I will go bare.
I really need to start using a TT bike instead of a road bike.
I have Laskoās so not sure about the Vacmaster, but this is why I have all 4 fans on smart plugs. I have them set on setting 2 of 3, but I definitely couldnāt handle 4 or even 3 of them when I first start. I warm up with one and then usually by the time the first set of intervals starts I am hot enough that I want all 4.
There are times where its cool enough in my basement where I am more comfortable with a jersey on as I sometimes get some minor exercise induced asthma and its much more likely if its cool. Sometimes I donāt want air blowing directly on my chest, hence now and then I do wear a jersey indoors.
Then there are those times we have house guests or my wife is having ladyās night upstairs and I donāt want to risk permanently scarring anyone who might inadvertently wonder within view of my pain cave . . . . .
When I was in chemotherapy there was sometimes I had to wear one to start and perhaps all the time on recovery sessions (my nerves got tricked by the drugs into thinking they were getting crushed if it was cold) or in my old houses garage when it was below 0deg C out but on an intense session Iāve always ended up taking it off and mostly donāt wear one in the first place but I donāt have anyone to scare (even if I did theyād probably laugh) ![]()
Honestly, in between training for three sports and occasionally wearing regular people clothes thereās no way Iām willingly taking on any extra laundry. Canāt keep up with the socks as it is.
EDIT: guess I should add sports bras to my list. Doubles as pockets.
Did you train through your chemo? Hard coreā¦
Best way to combat it the docs have realised. If you lie down to it, it hits you harder, causing you to lie down to it more, which in turn causes more side effects, a vicious circle so as to speak ![]()
For some reason my Assoss bibs are my least favorite to wear outside and my favorite to wear inside. Not time in saddle dependent!
That reminds me I want to dig out my Assoss bibs I used them for LBL and they were fab but the constant ridicule about the crotch pocket saw me retire them to the back of the wardrobe ![]()
Rollers - (with an internal flywheel and erg capability, though I donāt use the latter often). I find it more engaging. Also Iām fairly certain it has helped by bike handling significantly.
For some workouts Iāll stick a few ice packs in my jersey pockets.
Dry sauna for afterwards (time and planning allowing)
For high-flow high velocity fans, you can get good bang for buck in the carpet dryer type blowers from home centers.
I have something like the following which blows quite hard: 900 CFM for about $115.
Not angle adjustable like more general blowers, but much better CFM/$
Shop fan, garage door open, AirPods with music, water and Gatorade
I think this is one of those things where itās just down to personal preference and the individual make-up of the rider.
I have 2 x Clevas that point to my forearms / chest & torso area and then one traditional fan on my right ride at head level and another on the floor point up towards my side / back.
TBH I could easily see myself getting a 3rd Cleva at some point to replace the fan that points at my head.
In the winter I start a couple of the fans on low level and ramp up the cooling as the temps climb and my HR goes up / intensity of the workout climbs.
In the summer (especially current heatwave) all four are running at max from the gun.
Iām overweight though at around 20% bf so I get hot FAST in warm weather - so I guess this is a contributing factor.
I can say I 100% noticed a performance improvement from the Cleva units when I got them - pretty much a game changer in terms of replicating to a lesser degree the cooling on an outdoor ride.
Iāve always noticed my power is lower indoors (on numerous setups compared to a variety of different power meters on different outdoor bikes) with a drop of somewhere between 5% to 7% and I ascribe this for the most part to cooling - I definitely find it more of an ordeal to hold a set power for any given time when the temperature rises - for example 3x10 mins sweetspot at 90% feels very achievable in moderate temperatures but when itās super hot it feels subjectively more like trying to hit closer to threshold - the fans have helped take the edge off that.
Even endurance rides I canāt get into movies. I tried. It just doesnāt motivate me. Itās a weird feeling. So music it is!
Yeah, me neither. I can watch sporting events I care about, otherwise podcasts, music, or even reading before I can do a movie.
