Indoor Performance Aids. What all do you use?

I use a decrepit old Music stand to hold my Tablet

Rather than food, I often do the opposite, ie, Fast that means only water for hydration, and nothing else. Fasting triggers Autophagy - the replacement of of poor cells. Of course more obviously it triggers fat burning, not for weight loss (although that might be needed) rather to prepare your body for using that energy resource.

I want to say that your comment has changed indoor cycling for me. I have been struggling with indoor cycling. My VO2 Max when riding outdoors is excellent but every time I would ride indoors I would lose at least a point of my VO2 Max (I know getting wrapped up in numbers is not good but losing one every time is deflating). While I would eventually gain the points back when I went for rides outdoors, I get more opportunities to ride indoors than outdoors so the net effect was negative. It got to the point that I did not want to ride indoors.

I considered buying a large industrial fan or many, as I had been using a smaller fan (although I felt like it provided good air flow). But I did not think having six fans placed in every direction made much sense.

So there I was beginning a sufferfest indoors last night bummed that despite my hard effort I was going to lose fitness points when I thought what do i have to lose, I am going to try that personā€™s idea of rubbing the sweat over my chest, face and arms instead of toweling or letting it fall off.

So every so often I would rub the sweat all over to prevent it from falling to the mat and would only towel off my hands before going back to the bars.

Wow what a game changer! Not only did I regain the VO2 Max point I had lost the night before but gained two more to boot moving my VO2 Max to Superior! I cannot tell you how happy I am that I can now ride indoors and not feel like all my work was for nothing.

Do not let the grossness of rubbing the sweat everywhere stand in the way of greatness!

Iā€™m loving seeing all the different set ups yaā€™ll have.

Are people using Zwift in controllable mode or is TR controlling your trainer? Iā€™ve just started on my indoor cycling ā€œjourneyā€ with two training sessions under my belt. For both Iā€™ve had Zwift on in the background and NOT controlling my trainer. However it seems a bit silly because I can go up hills on Zwift at different speeds than what it would be if controlled by Zwift.

Is there a way to do TR workouts but still have the trainer controlled by Zwift? Interested to understand the different options. Perhaps it depends on the workout type too?

Controlled by TR is the way I do it.

It isnā€™t a ā€œdifferent speedā€. Zwift will take whatever watts you are doing and calculate the speed based on the incline, weight, etc.

I just use it for something else to look at. Its also nice when intervals line up with segments.

True, bad choice of words. But thanks, yes this is what I was doing.

Can you expand on what you mean here? I know you said it was a bad choice of words, but then Iā€™m not sure what you did mean.

If TR is controlling your wattage, you should see identical wattage in Zwift, which would mean 200 watts = 200 watts. Hereā€™s a simple ā€œhow toā€ article that might help if the problem is with how youā€™re connecting. https://www.smartbiketrainers.com/run-zwift-trainerroad-simultaniously-1948

Hey @Pbase. This is my first week using TrainerRoad, having a power meter and thinking about power while riding. Iā€™m not used to seeing/thinking about power, inclines and speed and how it all comes together.

I completed a session this morning with Zwift in the background and now it makes sense

Awesome. Welcome to the team!

In TR mark it as an outside workout. Youā€™ll need to use a bike computer for your cues, just like outside.

In Zwift just ride. Start your bike computer and launch the TR outside workout. If you have a smart trainer then Zwift will be in sim mode and it will be like doing interval work outside. The flatter courses in Zwift will be pretty challenging if you havenā€™t done interval work outside.
