I HATE forced updates

If it is a setting, I’d love to know what it is. Here is what I get for each and every update.

If I hit cancel there the update won’t be installed and it will have to be downloaded again the next time I restart TR. The user account I’m running on has Admin privileges. I’m on a 2020 M1 mac mini running Ventura 13.2, but this has been happening for a long time, and I’m pretty sure it was occurring on my old mac prior to this one. On the other hand, I never get prompted for anything like this when upgrading Zwift on the same machine using the same account.

This is what happens each time TR quits; whether by one of the restarts caused by an update, or if I’m just quitting out of TR after finishing a workout. This has been going on for ~3-4 months.

You might possibly avoid the admin user/password if you install TR somewhere in your home directory (or under it). My suspicion is the new helper tool permission issue is due to installing TR under /Applications folder.

Yeah, I would definitely get on with support to troubleshoot. Something is going on with your app setup.

I’ve never seen any of these permissions pop-ups in my 7 years of using the TrainerRoad Mac app. I use the Beta app, not sure if that makes a difference…

In my experience the updates are pretty impactless, they download in the background on the top bar and then show a link to restart now, or I can ignore it and the update is applied the next time I start. I usually just let it do its thing while I’m getting ready for my workout.

And which credentials do you need to use to get past this? TR, or MacOS login?

(Please, please don’t say “I don’t know, they’re the same”…)

MacOS login

TR is installed under /Applications. It’s been so long since I initially installed it, I don’t remember there being an option to install it elsewhere. Maybe this has something to do with it; i’ll re-install and test. But if that’s the case, why don’t Zwift updates also require a helper? Zwift is also installed in /Applications.

I can’t think of a single app that uses a helper app that requires permissions on update, except for when I had TR installed.

It’s an installation config issue. I suggest you contact TR support, unless some Max experts around here see an obvious solution.

Fwiw, I have Signal on another mac and it behaves similarly, requiring credentials for a helper app after each upgrade. Not training software, but I have seen this before.

I probably have too, but cannot recall off the top of my head.

My user account does not have admin privileges. I did that on purpose. Some software I install in my home directory, under my personal Applications folder. For example I did it with TR:

But I haven’t used TR app in a long time. You can try my suggestion, not sure if it will work or not. Sorry I can’t be of more assistance.

Yeah, mine does that. And has done it for eons too.

It doesn’t affect the quality of the ride, data, or really anything. I’ve adopted that window, like a little lost puppy at the Humane Society, and decided to just consider it “charming”.

BTW folks, this is beta software. We all knew the deal going in.

Normal release software? I don’t really run the production-code very often, so I have no idea what bugs might be in there…

Wait, what? I don’t have anything turned on in Early Access, and don’t remember signing up for a beta. TR has been around for many years. What makes you say this is beta rather than production code?

I hope I didn’t misspeak (mis-post). That error appears for me when I run the beta version of TrainerRoad, and it finishes an auto-update.

My ‘production’ version of TrainerRoad, to the best of my knowledge, does not exhibit that error splash after an update.

I’m not finding anything on mine that says beta. I do see a version number under Support which is 2023.6.0.228. This version came via auto-update today. Do you see something on yours that indicates its a beta version?

I just logged in, got an update, and am on the same version as you. I am not on the beta program.

Non-helpful opinion - if they let us opt out of updates we would be seeing complaints about how every time someone has an issue and contacts support they ask you to update your software.

I fortunately have had no problems, and find the way it updates (next time you launch the app) is much better than my experience with Zwift where I am waiting to start a workout because of how long the forced update on launch takes.

I also appreciate as an IT person that everyone is on the same version which helps tremendously with support.

Hopefully whatever issues you guys have been having with the app can be quickly resolved by support
