Thanks!
What is the carb intake you’re trying to match to the bicarb? I wouldn’t want to consume solid food that close to racing but would like to replicate the same with gels or mix.
Is that .35/kg three times.
Or do you take that .35/kg and then divide it up 3 ways?
I’m researching this for my son who is running track. He’s transitioned from long distance to focusing on the 400m but he also runs the 100 & 200m. Unfortunately the 200m comes right after his 400m. He only ends up with maybe 10 minutes for recovery. This should be the perfect kind of race scenario for bicarb.
Oh, I think he’s going to notice a big difference. That’s nearly the perfect application! Here’s the protocol I’ve been using for quite a while:
~1.5tsp mixed in 9oz water…eat 1/2 a chessman shortbread cookie & drink it.
Wait 38 minutes, mix another ~1.5tsp in 9oz water, eat half a cookie and drink.
Wait 38 minutes, repeat
Wait 30 to 60 minutes, then do the effort.
if I weigh 185-195lbs I’ll use the above protocol. But you can mix and match however is tolerable/appropriate. Here’s some data on HCO3 levels/minutes from consumption/dosing.
Thanks so much!
I’ve been listening to Marinus Petersen (Killawatt coaching). He’s been on the podcast circuit talking about bicarb. His recipe is bicarb mixed in Jello. I was going to try and replicate this for my son since taking Jello to school would be easy. I’m just trying to figure out how much to put in the jello.
I read several studies. Beta Alanine also shows promise for short events. The one time I tried it, it made my fingers tingle!
Beta alanine works but yes you do get a tingle.
I would try the Maurten bicarb, see how that goes then work on making a cheaper alternative and save that for race days.
I just made a batch of bicarb jello for him. We’ll try it on a training day first and see if he tolerates it.
I tried it after mixed and it tastes pretty bad. I’ll be curious to see if the gelatin changes that any after it sets up.
The other option, maybe easier, is trying enteric capsules.
Ime enteric capsules are not as good as jello. Plus it’s a lot of capsules to get down if you don’t like swallowing pills.
I made the first batch of bicarb jello. Gawd, it’s horrible tasting. I could probably get it down. I’m not sure my middle school sprinter will. I may have to try it myself for a workout just to see.
I added extra sugar to the jello and it doesn’t taste sweet at all.
I tried this as well, it was horrible tasting. The good thing though is because it’s cold and it’s jello, you don’t have to chew, just swallow. And swallow I did.
Same! I was hoping you’d be able to find some secret recipe & we’d all benefit…but, yeah, I tried that & it tasted worse than just slamming some water & bicarb. But I do think you can up the dose with more confidence if you use gelatin.
One of these days I want to try making a bicarb mix similar to what Maurten has. It works well for me and is easy to take a high dose without the usual issues. Should be fairly doable but just need to find time to try it out.
I find Maurten’s bicarb to be quite palatable, though before trying it i just mixed 20g baking soda and 4oz water. Both seem(?) effective, but the latter produces more, albeit predictable and manageable, side effects.
Breathing may go into intra vascular as well.
this wont work and you cant get some of those ingredients easily. I use enteric coated capsules which have the same side effect as the Maurten hydrogel delivery system just much cheaper although you do have to swallow 20-30 capsules.
This is not the same recipe at all as the Maurten one though? It has many ingredients that Maurten does not so hardly a clone.
Is the Maurten secret the little balls of bicarb that are in the soup the guy’s eating in the video? Some how they get it to clump and then it by passes the stomach?
Sodium alginate just seems like a thickener similar to jello / gelatin.
(If I make this jello concoction again, I’m going to add in a gelatin packet in order to make it finger jello.)
From what I’ve hear the sodium bicarb is inside the balls. I don’t know what the gel is for, probably to suspend the balls - but once in the stomach, the digestion results in a slow release so that the effects last longer. The maurten guy was on a podcast that I listened to and he went over that.
