I live in Malaysia, bought it on a difference e-commerce platform. Anyway the Maltodextrin and Fructose went for around $4.2
/kgI’ve been using Tailwind Endurance Fuel for a couple of months now on the trainer in prep for a training camp down south next week. Each scoop is 25g CHO (100 cal) and I’ve had no problems with 3 x scoops in a 710ml bottle, taking in 1/hr. Will have to try 4 x scoops, to see. It goes down easy, and I haven’t had any GI issues at all.
I tried Maurten 320 and 160 in the past, and it’s good if you can get the right ‘hardness’ of water, i.e. Calcium content. I used it on a bikepacking trip last year, and it wasn’t so great due to the different water sources and the heat along the way.
Karbolyn Neutral + Gatorade powder.
Did my first few bottles over the last 10 days. I would rather drink water, but there’s no doubt my performance prefers the carbs.
Remember a standard bottle is like 600mL so its the same amount effectively as 90g of carbs in a 600mL bottle as 150 in a 1L.
Is that a thing? I notice that I get that too after eating +100g of carbs in 1 sitting.
It’s a good question! I think @Jonathan mentioned before he was using Maurten, at least during races.
Don’t recall/know about @Nate_Pearson and what he does for his workouts
Beta fuel or I make my own. Maltodextrin + fructose + salt.
It’s an early indicator. Keep it up and you’ll get GI distress and a quick stop to the portapotty.
Once you have that as a data point you can start to dial back the mix until you don’t get it. The benefit of me doing all fo this indoors and on the trainer is i can control a lot of the variables so i know how much i am consuming and what is going into each bottle and the rate of consumption, so if i dial things up or down i can note any differences in GI issues.
Fast marathon’s are usually less than 3 hours and while they use a ton of energy, the fueling needs are different than a 5 or 6+ hour bike race. It’s also more critical when you are racing back-to-back days like in a stage race or weekend race series. Just my experience…
Still really hoping to get a definitive answer as to whether sucrose breaks down into glucose and fructose for immediate use in the digestive tract. I asked in the last podcast but they didn’t address it, maybe because @chad wasn’t on that day.
Fair point - fast marathons are ALWAYS less than 3 hours - (well quite a lot less actually) but I take your point - with decent carbo loading you can hammer it on 6 gels or 5 bottle of Lucozade sport which is what they supply at the London Marathon…and of course yes you have no chance of doing anything the next day bar going down the stairs sitting on your arse!
@Nate_Pearson how are you accurately measuring your salt when you mix your own since the quantity needed is fairly small?
As mentioned on here, maple syrup.
Its easy on the stomach once diluted. Can be mixed with a bit of salt… pretty cheap compared to sport drinks. And being canadian, this encourages my gaddamn heritage!
Yeah i think in my bottle the ratio ends up being about 1:3 (maple syrup to water) with like 1/4 teaspoon of salt. My bottle is 24oz i think (about 700ml)
Maple syrup is where it’s at but I’m experimenting with a mix of maltodextrin, fructose and maple syrup in about equal parts in order to save money. Judging by the gas I had after this morning’s workout I haven’t gotten used to it yet.
Sure… that’s accurate actually (maybe even rounding down!) But at least i know exactly what i’m putting in.
And i always have maple syrup. I have kids. I make pancakes.
I’ll only use it on special rides/races… So far i have 2 longish rides and 2 triathlons lined up. I can afford the $8
So of those charity rides i can use chews or whatever other sorcery as well alongside that if i wanna use a weaker ratio
I can get 450-470g of carbs (2:1 maltodextrin + fructose) in a 500ml Elite Crono Cx bottle. This is where I’ll bring almost all of my food for my next IM race where I might ride in 5 hours (90g/hr). I drink water, drink from this bottle a little bit and more water. Tried a couple times already in trainning and so far so good.
I’ve been mixing Maltodextrin, Fructose, and salt in a bottle to get 100g of carbs at a cost of $0.77 per bottle. It was getting too expensive drinking Maurten all the time so I started making it myself. I’m glad I started experimenting both because of the cost savings but also because it allows easy customization of g/bottle.
Sucrose is just table sugar. It definitely breaks down for immediate use. There might be things that break down slightly faster…but we’re talking minutes. I seriously doubt you would notice anything hitting your system faster than straight, dissolved, table sugar.
I bought two big 11lb bags of maltodextrin from MyProtein back when they offered it and Fructose powder from amazon. I think you get 6lbs of fructose for 24* bucks. I’ve been experimenting with the 1:1 and then I just add the sodium requirements based on my sweat test with sodium citrate or elete.
