Hopped the pond and moved to Munich...where to MTB?

I prefer XC riding and just did a permanent move to Munich on December 22nd.

Two questions:

  1. Where to ride
  2. Where to live within 1 hr commute to Wittelbacherplatz?

Currently considering a rental location in Grafing which seems to be less than an hour from a place called Samerberg which seems interesting. Should I rather look Southwest towards Garmisch and live in Starnberg?

Any DOs or DON’Ts would be appreciated.

Munich and its surroundings has lots of places to go ride. For XC tours, one spot I really liked were the lakes to the South of Holzkirchen (Schliersee, Tegernsee, etc.). You can take the BOB (Bayrische Oberlandbahn), get off at one of the lakes and ride. You can stop at an Alm for lunch, etc. It is really quite good.

For some trails in the city itself, there are some along the Isar, e. g. around Großhesseloher Brücke, Grünwald and so forth.

The only thing you won’t get in close proximity are really tall mountains. But if you are willing to take a car, you can also venture into Austria. It is a great place for XC riging.

I have no knowlege of the area but just looked on Trailforks. Seems everything is south.

I see you are literally right in the middle of the city. I live out to the east on the edge of Ebersberg Forrest. My advice, head south towards Starnberg, there is lots of greenery and trails. You can always take a train on the weekends to get further out.

Thank you. Are you saying there are no decent trails on your side, e.g. southeast? I prefer that side due to better pricing of rental properties and when we went out to Grafing yesterday there seemed to be a lot of space and fields…which may not translate to good riding trails. Where do you ride in your area? Tx

South / East is good. Whenever I ride I just head south into the greenery, lots of trails. I was just mentioning from where you are, its probably easier to just head directly south.

Another area for you, you can hit the Isar river quickly from there and also head south (or north). There are some trails along side and in some areas not suitable for road bikes so a mountain bike fits.

Yes, that’s been my experience, too. The BOB has cars for cyclists, so it is actually quite convenient (unless you catch the train the same time everyone else does …).

Yup. Near Grünwalder Brücke they have the infamous bomb crater (Bombenkrater), and lots of technical trails that are parallel to the pathways. I don’t really know the Northern part of the Isar, though.
