Height and weight question

I’ve also got a feeling that Jonathan was slightly under 5’10", but that’s from my memory of some off-handed comment from a pod and I apologise if it’s not true (I seem to recall thinking that he’s marginally shorter than Amber and she’s 5’10").

Either way, Jonathan has wicked good athlete genes and is the wrong guy to be comparing too.

Nothing concrete. Mainly because above average is a pretty low metric among the general public and cyclists. But here you go:

In high school I played American football, bball and track. In football I was a defensive end and fullback. In bball I was always one of the strongest players on the court. I won the shot-put event at a couple meets. I ran the 200 in 22 seconds (rounding down from a PR of 22.98  ). I did manual labor all through high school and college, I still lift weights 1-2 a week. In my completely unbiased view, that puts me at above average strength.

Unfortunately, none of those things make me faster or more aerodynamic.

I know what you mean… and its not the only reason I say to myself “embrace teh suck” :joy: like when I’m at the weekly ‘social ride’ with a 115+kg dude that is holding 350W for 40-50 minutes on the “A route” where its flat and W/kg doesn’t matter. For the climbing suck the solution is simple - ride with people at your level of fitness! Or call yourself the sweep and have fun telling people you brought extra brooms if there are a lot of big climbs  “Always catching the group behind me”

I used to go to the doctor s and be weighed I’d have a BMI of about 30. I’d say to my doctor I’d ridden 200 miles that week and he’d just say, that’s fine. The bmi has a lot to answer for

6ft 2 (188cm), my ‘normal’ weight when training is 164 lb (about 74kg I think). Race weight I go down to about 160lb and in off-season I go up to around 170 lb

Feature request - a thumbs down button for posts about weight from guys who are less 70 kg. :joy:

BMI is just a statistical number that is good for large groups of people. It shouldn’t be used to indicate health by itself.

I am 172ish CM and 66 KG, and on the heavy side side right now. As I get closer to summer, my weight comes down. I don’t maintain my weight year round.

My heavist was about 91 Kg when I was in my late 20’s. I put on weight easy. I went from 57 in boot camp at 18, stayed there until I was about 21, then shot up to about 85 a couple years later. I got myself down do 73 over a few years and thought that was a good, healthy weight for me.

I keep my eye on my weight mainly due to what happened to me healthwise so I am keeping my eye out for rapid changes but thankfully it only varies by the typical natural fluctuations.

I am 55, 180cm and currently 75kg. I generally get down to about 71kg by my summer main event. I don’t aim at these weights just the natural fluctuation over each year that coincides with the amount of exercise I’m doing and fitness. I always let my weight creep a little early winter as I chill. It’s not skinny just slim / wiry, and very healthy weights for me…

I don’t have an ftp of 5W/kg :joy:

I’m 55, 178cm, 84kg, 24% body fat according to Withings scale, FTP in the 230s. Was 76-79 kg when racing Cat 2/Cat 3 back in the 80s and riding 400 mi/week, so never that light. Maybe 72 kg in high school running cross country and track. That would not be a healthy or realistic weight now.

I’m kinda hoping to get down to < 80kg by losing some of that fat, but started weightlifting so I’m going to focus on body composition / increasing FTP a bunch and ignore body weight for now. I’ll focus on weight in future IF there is some reason to.

I’m 190cm tall, 83kg and around 10% body fat according to my withings. My weight fluctuates all the time but averages around 183-182 or 83kgs or so.
I don’t care about being skinny even though I’ve always been called skinny. With my height I could look “normal” at 200 pounds.
I do the mid volume plan or low volume plus lots endurance and lift weights 2-3 times a week and sometimes 1 day if life gets busy.

I’m 6’3” tall and currently fluctuating between 204 and 207 lbs.

So basically a ‘heavier’ rider. I have a large frame but also enjoy my food too much for my own good, especially given I turn 50 next year, so recognise I have room for improvement in the bodyfat area, at around 20% currently.

Still - I reflect that in late 2016 I had ballooned to to 268lbs and a mate who introduced me to road cycling basically changed my life.

With that in mind I’m not as hard on myself as I might otherwise be; as the ongoing trend is generally downward.

I need a sticker on my top tube that says “You too fat to race!” Which I am…

But laying off the beer and burgers is helping. Not fun, but helpful.

180cm and 88kg at the moment. A decent weight range for me is 80-83kg. I’ve been down to 76kg (which was my weight when I left school 45yrs ago) in recent years but I felt weak.

The main complainants at my current weight are my trousers

188cm(6’2”) and 68kg(149lbs). Too skinny, always tired and no sprint at all.

Im 5ft 9inches (175cm) and 9.5 stone (133lb, 60kg). I am actually carrying more weight than I was at 62kg as I had a 3kg tumour removed 3 years ago. At 46years and stuffing my face when I am not on the bike, I am amazed I am this weight, when I was 11.5st (161lb, 73kg) when I left school.

@mcneese.chad @Jouko @TRusername what withings scale do you have? Do you recommend it? Do you have any feedback from your scale to the Garmin index S2?

Would like to get a smart scale.
Thanks

I have to chime in for the short stalky/muscular guys.
I am 163cm (5’4") and 66-67Kg (145-147lbs).
No idea on my breakdown but now I am interested in a smart scale.
I would like to get to 63-64Kg but that may continue to be a goal for some time.
Hard to have the discipline to drop more with 2 young kids, treats around, eating their left overs, 47 later this month, seem to have more things working against than for me, lol, but I will keep trying.

Caleb Ewan is 165cm 67Kg (source internet).
Maybe I will stay status quo and shoot for his numbers …

In university I weighed 65kg at 185cm tall, for a BMI of 19. I was very skinny. I started power lifting. The most I could ever get my weight up to was 88kg (BMI 26) and that was a lot of effort, continuously eating, and there was a lot of fat there. Then I started biking instead.

Run around 75-78kg now depending on season. Leaner. With biking 10h a week and some weightlifting this means going out of my way to eat, a bit more than I feel the need to, to not lose weight. Same waist size as when I was 65kg (actually a bit smaller), but larger chest and limbs. DL work set is 275lbx5 or 315lbx3.

The take away point is that muscle is heavy. If you put 5cm on your chest circumference from doing back exercises, you may look the same size as someone else, but easily weigh more than 5kg than them.
