Having trouble waking up 12 speed 105 Di2

I have a 2023 Canyon with 12 speed 105 Di2. Lately I have had issues waking the system up when starting a ride. Usually it requires one click, on both left and right shifter, to wake the front and rear derailleur up, and then it shifts normally with the next clicks. At some point it started requiring 7-10 clicks and then even more. I updated the firmware and changed to new batteries in both shifters. That fixed the issue for a while but now it’s back again. Before today’s ride it took 2-3 minutes of furiously clicking before I got it working. When it first wakes up it shifts with no issues for the entire ride.

A couple of hours after today’s ride I testet the shifters again and this time the front derailleur woke up after one click but the rear derailleur was completely unresponsive. I checked that the cable to the derailleur was securely fastened and the main battery works as expected. I tried removing the shifter batteries and when putting them back in the rear derailleur woke up at once. Anyone had similar issues or have some tips to what the problem might be?

Mine has always worked with a single (maybe 2? O forget now) clicks. Since my left shifter is broken, it definitely only requires one side.

I’m assuming DA and 105 are the same electronics.

Mine wakes up at different times. Yesterday the front derailleur woke up a minute before I got the rear derailleur to work. DA uses only one battery in the shifter, and 105 has two, but I’m guessing the potential issues are similar either way.

You might need to update the shifter firmware which most likely involves bringing it to a shop. As you probably know, the shifter has to be directly connected to a computer to update its firmware unlike SRAM shifters which can be done over bluetooth.

I had issues with my 105 Di2 last year (unrelated to yours - battery drain on shifters) and the firmware update done in the shop solved it for me.

All the firmware was updated when I tried to fix it last time. It started with me bricking the whole system trying to update over Bluetooth and had to get help disconnecting and reassembling everything to get it working again.

For now I have changed the shifter batteries again and I’ll see how long these last to rule out faulty batteries.

Actually, with a cable you can temporarily wire up the shifters then update them with the app on your phone. See here.

If it is of any use, I have about 16,000 miles on my DA without changing a battery yet. I would expect a two battery system to last longer.

It’s supposed to be one year for DA with one battery and two years for the ones with two.

Modern gear problems :joy:
