Di2 shifters not responding

It’s been a while since I’ve ridden outside. Went out and no shifting (again!)

Eventually got it connected to E-tube app but the shifters aren’t communicating it seems:

I’ve had it since May and while di2 is nice this is like the fifth time I’m riding without gears - it’s getting tedious! :grimacing::sweat_smile:

Battery?

First thing I’d try is to unpair the shifters (use the ‘add wireless switch’ page on the ‘customize’ screen, tap the blue icon) and then re-pair them.

Before I do that, any idea what a solid green light followed by three blue flashes means?

—Edit: ah it means I’m charged and in “full syncro mode”

Should I see battery indicators on the shifters themselves if I hold the buttons down for a few seconds?

From bettershifting.com

It was the shifter batteries. Replaced all four. I’ll bet that’s been my trouble since getting the bike. It’s a shame the app doesn’t notify you when batteries are low.

I’ll send my invoice. My shifters recently sent a notification to the head unit that a battery was low. When it wasn’t the seat tube battery, I used etube to see what battery was low.

Do you use a head unit while outside? For the wahoo head units (at least) you can set up a page to view all the di2 info, ie current gear and battery life (derailleur AND shifters). For the derailleur it displays a percentage and for the shifters a little icon. The icon for the shifters is certainly better than nothing as it can be very easy to forget about the shifters considering the battery life for them!

keep an eye on your battery for the next year or so via your headunit. One of 2 things is going on… Either your shifters came in stock form with bad batteries or something is connecting when it shouldnt, causing drain. Make sure when you close the etube app, you actually disconnect it. Had this happen on an 11spd setup once and figured this out morning of a race (had my charger plugged into the trunk and running to the battery while on the car en route…bad idea!

These shifter batteries are typically set it and forget it, replace at an annual service. For comparison, ive had axs on my MTB for at least 3 or 4 years and havnt touched the shifter battery yet, Di2 seems to be even more power efficient than sram

I’m just below the compatibility line with an old Edge 520 plus, and new FR265.

Still think the dedicated eTube app should alert us.

Will add it to the ever growing list of things I need batteries for in order to do my hobby!:wink:. Thanks all.

It does.

April

And dead again.

Left shifter showing green, right shifter nothing. Rear D nothing.

So that’s
Bought in June
Dead in July
Dead in October, only 2000km done
Dead in February, new shifter batteries
Dead in April, only 3250km done

I think it’s time I contacted the shop!

And upgraded your Edge to one that supports Di2? Battery level is a great feature, most of the rest of it is just ‘more data’. After riding with a couple people that had dead batteries at the onset, or died during a ride, I vowed not to be ‘that guy’ as much as I could.

Hmm. Shop have had it a few days and say nothing is wrong. I was expecting a replaced battery under warrantee. Still at least I can ride tomorrow.

GAAAAAHH!!

30 mins before my first full club ride this year and the shifters are dead again.

Supposed to last two years, and I barely ride it at all. Some sites say four years as 105 have four batteries instead of two in Ultegra.

Got to be something going on, try a different shop?

IMO you have waited far too long and have tried to do things yourself that should be done in a shop by experienced mechanics with the right tools rather than you flailing about trying to do it yourself.

First the shop where you bought the bike should be responsible for it while under warranty. Ideally they ought to have the right diagnostic tools to check each component. If not find a shop that has the correct tool…in this case the Shimano Professional Diagnostic tool is needed to run a full diagnostic check on each component and if one, or more, has failed then Shimano warranty services needs to be brought in to respond and hopefully without a lot of drama replace parts that aren’t functioning as designed.

We, the shop where I work as a wrench monkey, recently acquired the S Pro Tool and it is an awesome device. I was working on a Quintana Roo TT bike with 11 speed Ultegra Di2 and the rear der. wasn’t shifting all the way up the cassette. The Etube app wouldn’t work as the pass code was changed and the owner didn’t remember what he changed it too…lol, wow…and the Etube app couldn’t change it but the Pro Tool could and did. That taken care of and changed I then ran full diagnostics and it said the rear der. was fubar’d. The owner said he crashed it…nice to tell us after we were working on it…It was also set up for full sync so I couldn’t just run it up and down the cassette in the big ring…sigh…hate sync…though the rear der. didn’t really show damaged the tool said it was broke. Fortunately we had an 11 speed DuraAce rear der laying about and upon swapping it out it worked perfectly.

The tool performed diagnostics on all the components and gave them a clean bill of health and updated some firmware.

I also could connect and use the Etube app…huzzah

So I suggest you find a shop with the tool and have them run diagnostics and if a part or parts fail they should be warrantied though you should hurry as time is likely running out.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Oh as an aside the customer had a full ‘fit’ done and the seat post had to be trimmed…after the fit with the bike on the stand for some bar tape, the mechanic said it’s not shifting…sure enough it wasn’t…sigh…what now…I asked what had been done and learned about the fit and seat post trim…hmmm check the battery connections…no it can’t be that…sigh…just check…sure enough one wire wasn’t fully inserted…works fine again…check your connections one last time…

You can shift through the full cassette when connected to the mobile app and using the phone to shift gears - or just turn off full sync mode :+1:

Sure can…I forgot to mention that but if it’s not connecting or recognizing the device then that won’t work.

I got about 9 months out of my 105 di2 shifter batteries and that is with fairly moderate use.

When I got the bike first the shifter batteries continually drained after only a few hours of riding. A firmware update in the shop sorted the issue.
