But that would just be replicating what other platforms do.
Maybe they offer and do it because its a good solution verses begin overly complex ![]()
There is no magic
, consistency and progression is all thats needed.
Aka good training principles.
100%. Fancy intervals with lots of little adjustments in power are mostly for entertainment. No need for them from a physiological standpoint.
NB For anyone looking at that Teams link for the first time, be aware there’s a UI bug which means only 10 of the Library’s 50 workouts are shown there…
The full list of 50 workouts are however shown and choosable if you access the “More Sweet Spot!” Team’s workout Library via either the filters [& “Teams” checkboxes] within the main Workouts page (from the LHS menu) OR when adding a workout to the Calendar and using the filters [& “Teams” checkboxes].
From a pure physiological point you’re prob right (I’m a computer monkey so couldn’t say for sure) but from a actually doing it standpoint the changes make it bareable! Long steady blocks with zero change makes what could be hard even harder in my mind.
This only applies to erg mode. This is why there’s merit to what some people say that there’s no need really for countless iterations of the same 2x20s if the only difference is a few moments at 0.5% ftp harder or easier here and there.
There seems to be quite a bit of negativity regarding TrainerRoad having too many workouts, so I’ll chime in to say that I love the vast workout library! It is genuinely fun to me to browse through the workouts, see all the interesting names, all the variations, and then decide what I want to do today or in the coming weeks. (I self-prescribe workouts.)
I understand that to gain fitness, which is the ultimate goal after all, you could probably reduce the different kinds of workouts to probably less than 20? But that would be incredibly boring. If that actually happened I would absolutely stop using TrainerRoad.
I love all the workouts. Please TrainerRoad, do not change this.
I suppose yes, improve the search and filtering as others have mentioned, why not.

I think TR just needs a simple outdoor workout library.
If im on a trainer then a a range of workouts is good. The more changes in pace the better to distract me from the pain and boredom.
If I’m outdoors I want a super simple structure to make execution easier from a cognitive standpoint.
And you need many workouts to be able to fine-tune the progression. If you add training blocks or a training plan, Adaptive Training should suggest a suitable workout for you that you can customize by selecting an alternate.
That’s what TR plans, do, too, though. If you add a base block, then you get fixed workout types for each day of the week, and the algorithms choose a suitable progression.
Indeed! Coach Chad said that back in the day. It’s why workouts like Geiger, Eclipse and other lumpy sweet spot workouts were made. Purely for a bit of interest for those who want it. As I understand it the same goes for over-under threshold workouts. Physiologically from what I’ve read on the forum there’s no extra benefit to them versus just doing long threshold or suprathreshold. However, if the idea of conquering a bunch of little castles gets you on your bike then all the better. Not to mention it’s a mental workout for convincing people they can go hard then go hard for a quick spell and then back down and not die (hopefully). I find Mary Austin is a great way to put your mind in the perspective that 95% can feel like recovery, or at least relief.
I think the ball drop-age is apparent in that yes, there are thousands of workouts yet AT and the like is only able to prescribe a very small fraction of them. Forum threads like “all roads lead to James” or whatever point this out that the current system is in desperate need of a rehash just from a being able to plumb the depths from a variety standpoint. And to say people can just pick others doesn’t speak to the fact that much of the user base is unwilling to go off on their own and try something not prescribed by the algo be it by alternate or train now (so many “AT told me to drive into a river” style threads on the forum as well). As things stand right now AT is myopic to the point of being boring.
No maybe about it.
I honestly gave up TR after getting advice from a coach for a full season. I was also sick of over-unders to the point I never wanted to see another one on my calendar. Sure, I could pick a different workout every time but the claim has been “right workout everytime”.
Well working with a coach, i did 6 over unders workouts in the span of 30 weeks. Which had a purpose and not scheduled each week forever like it seemed with TR. Now I realize how “simple” training can be and still work, don’t need any fancy algorithms just old fashioned progressive overload.
I didn’t even want to write this because it’s negative but I figured I may as well. Without complaining too much more, I do hope they make some subtle changes to their plans. Then maybe I’ll think about rejoining in the future.
What kind of threshold work do you do instead now? For me, I love over unders. But I kind of suck at hard starts
Now if I’m in a threshold block, I’m doing classic progression 3x15- 3x20 etc.
I was scheduled over unders during one block to help raise my Ftp and then later for event specific intervals and they were more along the lines of tempo over unders. Nothing like TrainerRoad, I find working my tte and then pushing above really works for me.
Disliking workout types ≠ they are bad for you.
My most-hated workouts are hard starts and long VO2max repeats, which push me to my limit. Over-unders aren’t my favorite either. They are bitter medicine, i. e. I do them because I know they are good for my fitness and push me in the right direction.
Sweet spot, 30-30s and similar short, hard VO2max efforts are my jam, though. But I know I need to do other workout types to progress.
Yeah I agree with that for sure. I don’t avoid hard starts
Yeah I agree with that for sure. I don’t avoid hard starts
Is there an upgrade today?
Assume not… there is a question mark
Today?
