Thats not what I was referring to as pedantic nonsense. So I think we’re good.
Ok yeah I see your point, yeah I wasn’t so focused on the “unhealthy” label, that is sort of arbitrary to me. And I think there is a lot unknown on nutrition. So perhaps the “best” diet does involve carbs, despite some downsides, or not, I don’t know
That’s not what I’m referring to.
I’m not touching this dumpster fire anymore This thread is liable to end up locked soon at this rate.
So that study states “Total carbohydrate intake has not been related to periodontitis”, with no citation. Don’t know how anybody could find that credible …
No one is saying that sugar cant have a negative effect on teeth. The point of contention is using that truth as the foundation for saying fruits and vegetables are unhealthy.
There are several citations in that study lauding the positive health benefits of fruits and veggies. Ground breaking stuff.
My honest question is how does anybody know for any of this stuff. For instance how many people have eaten say meat only diets for their whole lives and what are their outcomes. The answer is we have no idea. None of these studies can fix the fact that we don’t have any data. I would love to know myself.
Of course we have some clues, our paleolithic ancestors were hypercarnivores and if they made it past infancy and didn’t die from accidents they were actually quite healthy, tall, with strong bones and a healthy dentition fitting 32 teeth and even their brain capacity was larger than ours!
Sugar causes dental caries. No-one’s argueing with that. Sugar is a good energy source for riding a bike fast. No-one sensible is arguing with that.
None of it has much to do with the original thread topic though.
There seems to be an assumption that ingesting sugar during exercise leads increased blood sugar levels and to diabetes. I have not seen evidence that that is the case. There is, however, a lot of good evidence that exercise reduces incidence of Type 2 diabetes and improves glucose control in patients who already have Type 2 diabetes.
I’m happy to eat carbs during exercise. I take a risk with my teeth, but for me it’s worth it and I can brush beforehand to reduce the risk.
Never heard ‘caries’ before. I presume this is an American term for tooth decay.
What are the best ways to mitigate tooth decay when consuming a lot of carbs/sugar?
Caries is Latin. It’s used clinically throughout the English speaking world and most of the rest of Europe/Russia. Yes, it means tooth decay. In the US, most average folks say “cavities”.
Our ancestors were not “hypercarnivores”, in fact prehistoric humans ate mostly plant-heavy diets. This has been regularly bunked in modern paleoanthropological research.
Are you calling Liver King a liar?
I always wonder how terrible peoples diet were previously if eating only meat makes them perform and feel better.
Really think you forgot the /s
Carbs are fuel. In the case of caries, carbs are fuel for the bacteria that cause caries. To say that carbs cause caries is alarmist and missing the key information. As a dentist you of all people should know that and stop spreading misinformation. Not to mention that literally all fruits and veggies have carbs. I guess I should just eat nothing but meat and nuts. I’d feel embarrassed as a healthcare professional to say what you said honestly.
As they say, what do you call the person who finishes dead last in medical school?
Doctor.
Not all doctors and dentists are created equal.
