Getting Garmin into Strava

Like many people I unlinked my Garmin acocunt from Strava when it looked like they were having a dick measuring contest. The bonus from here is Garmin segment will pop up on my head unit for personal records, I didn’t want to pay Strava monthly for just a segment popup when I have mapping and analysis in other paid accounts.

The bit I miss is all the tools built on top of Strava, the Veloviewer yearly recap is a good example. I can export and manually upload rides but I was wondering if anyone had any services they could reccomend to get Strava from Garmin without connecting and loosing my segments.

If not, will go old school and manually upload.

If you’re an Apple user, check out RunGap.

However…if what you want is to load your Garmin data into Strava, why not just reconnect them on the free version?

I like the segment screen on my head unit. The Garmin segments only work (AFAIK) when Strava isn’t linked.

Essentially I’ve got two points I want:

  • Segments for testing/trying hard myself
  • Vélo viewer intégration for the yearly review

Automation means no segments, I’m happy to do it manually but was wondering if there were options.

I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying about automation because I don’t use segments, but I use RunGap as my interface between all apps (except TR ), but like I said, I feel like I’ve seen people say before that it’s Apple only. Sorry I can’t say if it imports the Garmin segments or not.

I might not have been super good at explaining!

Garmin segments are essentially a Strava segment knock off. There are headunit displays to show if I’m faster or slower than my personal best but as soon as you connect to Strava the assumption is you’re using Strava segments (which is a fairly safe assumption) but Strava doesn’t allow this without paying - which I don’t want to do for just a few segments I’m interested in.

So that I can see if I’m faster than last week I need to stick with Garmin segments, which isn’t the worst thing I’m never going to trouble the top 10 popular stuff I just want to try hard.

This then means I need to either manually download from Connect and up to Strava or was hoping for a tool to connect to Garmin that would push for me. Some sort of middle man. Which is what you suggested (big thanks for the idea  ) but I’m fully Garmin’d up with watches/headunits.

I get what you’re saying about wanting to use Garmin segments not Strava ones, but I don’t understand why connecting Garmin Connect to a free Strava account would break that. Regardless, using RunGap would allow you to send the Garmin ride to Strava without doing a download/upload, but I think RunGap only works on an IPhone, not Android

I’m all Garmin too, but I use an Apple phone.

Hope that makes sense! I feel like we’re talking around each other :man_facepalming:

I think we might be!

I found that when I connected it to Strava then they stopped showing but this was in 2023 so maybe I should test again!

Again, many thanks for the chat!

I haven’t tried it but a quick google found this garmin support page. Checkout the instructions under the header “Switching Between Garmin Connect and Strava Segments”. Sounds like exactly what you’re looking for.

I found that too!

Fingers crossed!

So funny that everyone had forgotten that there even was such a thing as Garmin segments until Strava decided to shoot themselves in the foot.

Very true!

I’m surprised that your post didn’t fall into the “Scunthorpe” trap! :joy:

Seems like it didn’t do the trick unless I’ve missed something.

Recconected Strava and the Garmin Segments don’t show again…. think I’ll be manually uploading to Strava as I like the segments to push myself.

In case this helps anyone I’ve worked the settings out (no thanks to Garmin “technical” support who said it was Strava).

I turned off the data from Strava and today I got my segments again, nice to encourage a bit of an effort!
