Garmin Training Status Maintaining

It seems even with the intervals on TR, Garmin has me at Maintaining. I’ve even done some outdoor rides with hills. Can’t break it.

Any thoughts?

Can you share your load focus chart? Here’s mine, as an example.

Just a guess here, but it looks like you’ve been doing more work in Z1/2 and above TH. If that’s the case, something in the middle, like 20min SS intervals will help build that “High Aerobic” bucket.

Also, as a side note, Garmin tends to not rate a longer ride where 90% of the ride is Z2 as anything other than “low aerobic”, even if you did several VO2 or Anaerobic intervals in the other 10%. You might come home gassed from the work, but Garmin will rate it “low aerobic” and tell you you need to do more high intensity work. If that’s happens, you can fix it by splitting the ride up into different back to back sessions

Note: depending on your goals, there’s nothing wrong with “Maintaining” status. I like the Garmin Connect system, but I HATE their wording. So many people see words like “Unproductive” or “Maintaining” and see negative connotations.

As an example: It’s summer. I’ve been traveling a lot and I’ve had houseguests. I’ve done a lot of hiking and some runs and less cycling than I would like. That doesn’t necessarily mean I’m “unproductive” health wise, it just means my VO2 isn’t increasing.

Oh my god. Thank you for your detailed response.

It is summer and my rides are more outside rides and mostly Z2. I can’t do many SS or intervals on the road due to safety reasons. So i keep it at Z2. There are hills where i am and i hit them often. When GC+ tells me I am maintaining I feel like a slacker.

Agree with pbase but do check you max heart rate hasn’t picked up an erroneous value, under setting, power and hr zones

Maintaining can also be because you aren’t recovering and benefitting from your workouts, so also look at things like Load and Sleep

Keep in mind that the heuristic Garmin uses to determine their training status is different than the oneTR uses, making comparisons difficult. And if you happen to use Zwift, also, you’d add a third heuristic to the mix, which is very different from the other two.

My sleep is always about 6-7 a night. I’m 59 and my doctor said sleep dwindling with age. I ride 5 days a week. 100 miles
