I’d like an audio Eat/Drink Prompt. I didn’t see that on the Menus in @GPLama 's review
Everything looks good in that unit but there’s nothing that makes me want to upgrade (maybe the bell , I admit I’m more excited about it than I should be).
I used to think a part of what you paid for Garmin devices was for longevity and felt confident when buying slightly older models. However, I’m not sure that’s the case anymore. I feel they left the X30 behind too early. The X40 will get new features for the moment but it’s uncertain for how long.
On the other hand, the X30s and plenty of models from different brands provide anything I’d need. It seems that the basics of cycling computers are pretty good across the board and most improvements are in the details and features.
It’s been there for many years.
I think @webdev511 was referring to voice prompts vs the audible beep on the older units.
100% this as one beep sounds just like any other on a 1040. Get too many limit alarms, turn prompts, power zone alarms. etc. and it’s all just noise.
Yeah, I had to turn off some of the notifications on my 840 (high traffic, sharp turns, etc) just so I would actually notice the Eat / Drink alerts I put in.
Dunno if I would want the voice prompts, though…then I am just reminding my competitors to eat and drink, as well.
Varia beep is all I need.
Varia beep translated in to voice… “Car coming. CAR Coming. CAR COMING REALLY FAST!”
I’m very skeptical given the price, but if you can make the Varia voice scream “Holy shit, watch out!” when someone’s going way too fast I will run not walk to buy it.
I have only had a 1030+ for a three years and have thought I would purchase a 1040 on Black Friday. However, now that I’ve seen the new screen, I’m not going to spend the money on the 1040. But…I’m also not willing to spend the price on the 1050. That means I’ll stay on the 1030 until there are better deals on the 1050. I wonder if Garmin has undercut themselves a bit from that perspective. (I know that won’t be a popular opinion here amongst the big spenders and the ultra distance crowd, but I’ll bet the general public is a lot more reluctant to drop $700 USD on a cycling computer)
In the case of the 830, for good reason. My sister is still using my 520 from 2016, and my 530 is still going strong.
Yes, I’m normally riding without a route and the only alerts I get are:
- varia radar
- start of interval
- eat & drink
I am quite surprised by all the concerns about battery life. Outside of the extreme ultra and bike packing scene, I don’t see this being an issue at all. I can’t imagine there are all that many people riding 15+ consecutive hours regularly.
I just completed a 500-mile ultra in 3 days using my 530, which also has a 20-hour battery life. No issues. 10-13 hour days and I simply recharged each night.
You can already do that via the paired phone. But direct from a built in speaker is neat.
we should rename this thread - “Garmin Edge 1050 Released, time to post about it”
Just skimmed the DCRainmaker review
Except for the price, I want one. Simply for the bell and some of the UI tweaks.
But I’m cheap and a buy/hold guy. Not much of an upgrader, except with the first couple of iPhones.
Thank you @dcrainmaker for this chart:
My 530 had no issue going 36 hours, but it had a MIP display that didn’t need the backlight to be seen. While 20 hours for me is a no-go(generally record 2-4 activities a year that are over 20 hours) to get their claimed 60 hours of battery life(which would be sufficient) you need to turn the backlight off, which renders the display worthless.
I get it though, I’m 100% in the minority of users, and even for me, outside of those 2-4 races a year, 20 hours would be plenty.
I view this as more of Garmin not being ok with the market share that Hammerhead has taken.
For those 2-4 activities, I would think entering battery-saver mode, where you simply touch the screen for it to light up, seems like a non-issue. I can’t imagine that you’re full race mode the whole 20+ hours? If you’re anything like me, when I am doing a ultra event, I play with my computer screens waaaaay too much simply to occupy my mind a bit.
but to get their claimed 60 hours, you need to limit to 4 interactions an hour. I usually don’t do much fiddling, the occasional swipe between my main screen and the map screen being about it.
The LCD screen isn’t solving any problem IMO. the MIP screen is more than capable of displaying black text on a white screen(or vice versa)…
Or just have a power mount and the whole battery life thing goes away.
Yeah battery shouldn’t be an issue for most people. It’s actually pretty good for the display.
However, given the X40 is still available, it’s one more reason not to upgrade for those that value long battery life or the convenience of not having to charge it often even if you don’t do ultra-long rides. That’s not my case but I see why it might be for some.
That’s not always a viable option, I use a combo mount to run a headlight, I can’t mount their under computer battery pack. It also will be to tight to the stem to plug in via the usb-c port to power it while riding.
