Finding Motivation for Stretching and Core Work: Tips and Strategies

I frequently find it challenging to stay motivated when it comes to stretching and core workouts.

What strategies do you use to keep yourself motivated to stretch? Have you discovered any apps or programs that you find particularly effective? I’d love to hear your tips for maintaining consistency with stretching or core exercises. Also, which types of stretching (like yoga, for example) do you find to be the most beneficial?

I walk the dog in the park every day. When he gets tired I run thru my stretching routine.
Core work ; I need some help with staying consistent. Like you.

It’s challenging for me as well, but the biggest thing that has helped me stay more consistent with it is simply ensuring that I have the time set aside and dedicated to it each week.

I typically do this 2-4 times a week before running, since it’s a lot harder to get going on a run without a warmup. Things tend to get away from me if I’m not running as much, though.

I schedule in recovery days and do yoga on those and my run days. I don’t like to see red on my TP calendar, and I have accountability buddies, so that motivates me to not skip. I do need to mix in more core work though.

I like Yoga with Adriene; here’s two of my go two sessions.

I add stretching / core work into my TrainingPeaks calendar so I either do it, or it shows up as Red as a missed workout. Motivation to do the workout and turn it Green

I incorporate my core work into my 2 day/wk strength training sessions, so just treat it as a normal muscle group.

For stretching, I have a short routine that I do after each ride and before going to bed. It hits each major muscle group, and only takes around 3-5 minutes.

The best stretching routine is the one you’re going to stick to. It does not do good to create the best/most elaborate stretching routine that is time consuming and you won’t stick with after a few months. I suggest finding something that doesn’t seem to have a major impact on your current daily routine that is easy to begin implementing and make it a habit.

I have my yoga mat next to my couch. So every evening when I’m about to lay down and turn on the TV, it’s just there looking at me.

So now I’ve made it a habit to do the first 10-15 min of my TV time, on the mat. I’m still getting my TV fix and I get my stretching done.
