depending on your country; COSTCO.
they sell some merino stuff that is amazing, i’ve got like 8 shirts from them for the price of 1 icebreaker long sleeve.
Whoa! I did my time in Eastern NY and never managed to get out for that: Respect.
Thanks, Rondal. I’m a monthly Costco shopper, but haven’t gone base layer hunting there. I’ll include some in my next visit.
Thanks, Kuttermax. Just ordered a SS and LS merino base from Rapha. I’ll have a look out for Icebreaker, too.
Does anyone have experience with DHB for their thermal stuff? I’ve been looking at their thermal bib tights, etc.
Brand is “cloudveil” if that helps at all.

Thanks!
I do not have experience with thermal, but i have the aeron roubaix tights. They have been comfortable for me all the way down to about 0°c.
I don’t know if the tights you have been looking at have a pad, but at least the one one mine has been really comfortable. Felt a little thin before i started to use it, but i did a five hour ride the other day with no discomfort.
zwift. sorry couldn’t resist. moved from the north to south and have become so soft to cold weather
25 degrees is about my limit. It’s not the clothes or kit honestly, my lungs just can’t handle It. Even with a balaclava the cold burns my lungs to the point I can taste blood if I’m going hard enough. How do you folks do it?
Bioracer Tempest range gets a vote for me.
Parentini Mossa and now their Vito are also superb. Mossa.2 for when its really really cold.
As long as you can sustain a high vanity threshold, air trim is it. https://www.bouldernordic.com/product/518/airtrim-cold-air-mask
Any time the temps get down to 5-10 degrees F, I definitely start taking it easy. No high intensity work. You’re right that very serious LT lung damage can occur. I’ll usually drop out of races at this point as I don’t trust my ability to not chase rabbits.
Big thumbs up on the Weaterneck (invented by a local rider). Work well into the single digits F on the bike, and wear it nordic skiing in really, really cold conditions. Hat portion fits nicely under the helmet and works nicely when you don’t need the mask portion.

Once it gets cold I reach for these. I like the to think that the colour makes me stand out a bit and they are certainly tough enough to last a few winters.
My garage and my trainer, if I have to go outside in the winter, it’s to snowboard or ski
There was a nice piece on CyclingTips that reviews Castelli cold weather RoS gear. With a lot of different products it can be confusing what the differences are, but this article does a great job going into the details and materials.
Cold weather for me is probably fall for most of you (benefits of living in Bay Area), but my go to is in increasing coldness order
- Light Vests + arm warmers
- Velocio soft shell vest + arm warmers
- Rapha Rain Vest (works surprisingly well for warmth on dry days) + arm warmers
- Rapha insulted vest + arm warmers
- Castelli Perfetto + arm warmers
- Castelli Gabba + arm warmers
I can also get away with knee warmers even in the coldest weather, and on really cold days, just toe covers.
I recently realized I’ve misplaced (or worse, lost) my old Giordana winter jacket. Hopefully I find it stashed in the wrong place (last seen in Spring when it was last cold and wet), because that garment is the ticket for temps in the 40s, 30s, and below. So… in its stead, these past few weeks I’ve been layering up:
- Craft Active Extreme baselayer (favorite base layer for xc skiing and cycling in the cold)
- Merino wool short sleeve (Icebreaker is one I have)
- Giordana FRC long-sleeve jersey (my favorite jersey)
- Sportful Fiandre short sleeve jacket made with GoreTex Windstopper
In temps north of mid-50s F, the Fiandre WS (wind-stopper) version is too warm for me. I prefer the Light Fiandre when temps are in the upper 50’s and 60’s. But mid-50s down to low 40’s, this WS version is perfect. It offers more wind protection than a vest—I particularly like the coverage on the shoulders and upper arms, without being as hot as a jacket.
My rollers…
Edit: why was this top of the forum for me?!?
I am a big believer in the Pearl Izumi AmPhib and Attack series clothes. I also love their gloves and shoe covers. Additionally, Gore Wear is my other go-to brand for winter/bad weather kit.
I do have a great lightweight Pactimo rain jacket that is perfect shoulder season riding as well.
