I guess hitting bumps on the downhills makes the PM think youre stomping on the pedals? not sure, but I’ve had two different stages PMs on my gravel bike and I keep getting like 1500 watt power spikes on bumpy downhills
Yup, can confirm that for left-foot-forward riders on descents, I got plenty of massive spikes on my Gen2 Stages Ultegra 6800 arm. Apparently not an issue for right-foot-forward riders from what I read.
I’m a right foot forward descender with Stages on my gravel bike and can confirm I’ve never seen any unusual spikes!

didnt want to be one of the 1st guinea pig to test but they have 2y warranty so was willing to risk it. was worth a shot to be 1st in usa, unless dc or shane have them already/testing -heehee

I’ve pulled the trigger on a stages as spring 2024 is just too vague.
Stages working well in first two rides but I’d have gone for these pedals without hesitation if I knew the date.
I think I’m going for a Quarq instead, but these are tempting for my gravel bike since I could potentially travel with them/put them on hotel bikes.
Quarq probably makes more sense for a gravel bike though.
He did calibrate them correctly (he is an engineer). He also found some online/forum info for people having similar issues. Apparently it makes a difference to torque the pedals insanely tight ( 35nm ) , and the accuracy can improve with continued use. He has gotten them working to where he is satisfied but it took some research and tweaking.
The Rally instructions recommend 34 N-m for the pedal installation torque. So, “insanely tight” is the recommended torque. My pedals match both or my trainers and my Assiomas.
I forgot about that. The “insanely tight” is another issue that made me not like my Garmin SPD @gpl

I agree 35nm is not that tight, I change mine out 2-3x a week, takes about 5 minutes at most.
Maybe I’m lucky but I have zero complaints with the rally Xcs.
Mine only have a squeak when using my Specialized sworks recon carbon bottom shoes. Puttting a little tri-flow on the cleats helps eliminate that issue. No squeaks when using my “cheap” mtb shoes. 3 years of use been to hell and back and work fine.
I’ve never seen any reason to make pedals tight. It’s not like they unscrew or slip. I leave most of my pedals just barely tightened. They come off with just a light press on the wrench.
For the SI unit challenged (like me)
- 35 Nm = 25.8 ft-lbs
Basically like applying 25 lbs force on a 12" long wrench. Firm but reasonable IMO.
Well if I use any pedals other than power meter pedals I wouldn’t care how tight they are either.
Since I use power meter pedals and they recommend them installed at 35nm for accuracy, then I’ll have to make sure they’re on there tight.
I basically screw them in all the way and give a little muscle so they’re taut and then they’re good to go.
If the pedals are threaded in barely tight it will affect power pedals. The pedals work by measuring the bend in the spindle under the pedaling force. This bend is very, very tiny. If the threads aren’t very snug then you can get movement in the threads when you push down rather than the tiny bending of the spindle. This will affect accuracy. So, any power pedal needs to have the threads tight so that there is no motion in them.
I usually tighten everything with a torque wrench, but for pedals I apply anti-seize and go with gutentight. Me pedal wrench is maybe 8 inches long, so it would be tough to really overdo it by going hand tight.
I think I’m only excited about the pedals because I was hoping for awhile favero would come out with spd pedals as I used to have their road pedals and they were great. But at this point I have 2 bikes both with sram axs crank arm PMs and only my mtb is without a PM which I’m just thinking a SIGEYI spider might be the cheapest option. I guess I’ll wait until the favero spd comes to the US
