Elite Aria Smart Trainer Fan

Thanks for the feedback. I’m from Europe, so no Laskos around, ony Laško lager beer.

Received the Vacmaster a few days ago, and I’ll start using in next week, when the forecast is for rain and cold. I hope it will do its job well for me, as the last winter I was using a normal fan and it was ok-ish. I train in the attic and I have a roof windows, so I can bump the cold if I really have to.

I was thinking of getting one of these blowers but I’ve got a trainer desk and was concerned it would mess up the airflow unless I put it to one side which may not be ideal.

Honestly, side position is likely better. Regardless of a desk, the front center position most people default to causes flow issues from the wheel and frame, IMO.

Floor mount is better to offset it a bit and get a more later flow across the body and miss the wheel/frame disruption. I actually think a higher mount and offset also beats floor mount in some cases too, become you can clear the bars and really hit the body with minimal flow issues.

Thanks, I might get one and give it a go. The fans I’ve got are really to big to put anywhere but on the floor.

Mine has to sit there because my pain corridor is too narrow. I would agree with you about it causing issues as I’ve not been overly impressed; perhaps I’ll move it to the rear, I’ve space there and swap it for the pedestal fan thats there and clears the wheel/frame.

Sounds like it would be worth a test to swap. I’d recommend getting the rear fan up, and as high as your hips if possible. Get a decent flow on your hips that then flows along your entire back and neck. Amazing cooling once setup like this.

I have 3 of these, super happy. I only wish they allowed for finer angle adjustment, or have a flatter enclosure so that one could use stuff (books, 3d printed wedges, etc…) to adjust the angle more easily.

They survived the dust through a home renovation.

I have all 3 mapped to the same remote, so I just have to click the button, which is attached to the handlebar.

Noise is much better than with the “big gym fan” I had before.

No issues of dry eyes for me (and I’ve done >4h sessions at maximum setting).

When I saw the Aria fan, I actually thought about tinkering a bit with an arduino and make the setup smarter, but I pretty much always use the max setting (it’s in my flat, so temp is always mild), so very likely not worth the hassle.

Any update?! I ended up returning the vacmaster and got a $67 deal on another Lasko pro blower fan. Realized I didn’t need the remote for where I had it positioned. But still would love a vertical air column!

My Sharper Image FLY fan is set for arrival tomorrow. Will see if I can test it tomorrow evening, or Thursday at the latest.

Looks an awesome fan :+1:

Features and style look promising. I’m curious how it will compare to my Lasko’s.

Current plan is to use this as my rear fan on the stool. Will be just a bit easier to use this remote vs sitting up and reaching backwards to use my hacked lever to control Lasko fan power and speed.

The shape of the flow of the Fly is more vertical too vs the horizontal Lasko’s, so I will be interested to see if that matters too.

How many fans do you currently use? I have one blower fan but that’s it. I do workout in an air conditioned room. I’m wondering if 2 fans would be of benefit.

That sharper image one looks nice. A remote is required for me as I currently just warm up then turn on the fan. But it would be nice

3 in normal use.

  1. High front center for head, face and upper chest.
  2. Rear center for hips, back & neck.
  3. Offset side front for main chest.

#1 & 3 ported to cold air from the window.

I start with #1 on for the warmup. Then kick on the rear #2 in the main set. I only really need #3 for when it’s not cold outside for #1, or when I have an extra hard workout. Sweat is the enemy in most workouts, and this setup keeps me dry most of the time with minimal sweat beading up and rarely enough to drip.

That’s a serious setup! I don’t think I get as much air flow when training outside.

This is why @mcneese.chad’s setup works so well and why Wahoo’s Headwind mounted directly in front of a trainer desk isn’t as effective. Off to one side would be much better.

Upper torso plus head and face are the key components to keeping cool indoors.
Chad gets that in spades with #1 and #2 alone.
There are other ways to achieve the required airflow, but I don’t think it’s practical to accomplish with a single fan/blower especially if floor mounted.

Fantastic graphic!!! :+1: That is a great representation of the basic flow I get.

Some people question the rear fan and assume it will be “canceled out” by the two front ones. But key here is the precise fan placement relative to my body along with the narrow stream of flow from the fans pretty much follow the width of my head and body. My body becomes a “wall” that keeps the flows mostly separate and allows each one to cleanly follow one surface of my body.

I have never really like the flow of a floor mounted fan. Even with my original circular fan setups, I had them on a table up high or used the vertical stand ones to get them up an more aligned with my torso. Fans set relatively close keeps air streams more narrow than a distant setups seen on most floor or even some raised locations. One fan at a distance can give a bigger flow area, but it seems to be slower flow and more “random” to me than these more closely spaced setups.

Thanks for the visual aid as I think it shows why placement can make a big difference, even with the best fan available.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious analogy, the rear fan is “drafting” behind you.

OK, did my first workout with the Sharper Image Fly 01 last night.

Initial impressions from testing showed:

  • Setting 1 is akin to a mild breeze and I could only see using it if I was ducting the coldest winter temps to it like I do with my front fans.
  • Setting 2 is a bit more but still below the low setting on even my smallest Lasko (Stanely) fan.
  • Setting 3 seems decent and something I can use.
  • Setting 4 is close to the high setting for my smallest Lasko (Stanely) fan used at the top front. It is close to low or mid setting on the larger Lasko fan I use at the rear.

Notably with this fan, the air stream is NARROW when compared to the Lasko fans. It is maybe 1/2 or 2/3 as wide and stay very narrow even 3-4 feet away from the outlet. The flow is also not very tall. It is a bit more than the narrow width, but I’d almost call this square in shape.

I will try to get some measurements and better comparison between my Lasko’s for reference.

  • TL:DR = But from these testing above and the ride below seem to place this fan as parallel to my smallest Lasko (Stanely) fan.
  • Sort of disappointing if I’m honest, with the only thing I can say makes it better is the remote. But considering that I only envision using the top two settings, I can’t say it is enough of a difference to be a clear winner.
  • Couple that with what I see as a sale price of around $50 USD for the Lasko (Stanely) I use at the front, the additional $40 for the FLY 01 is not worth it for a remote.

Based on that testing, I chose to use this at the top front location rather than the rear that I had originally expected prior to testing. It fit well on the same stand and got the flow aligned well. I went to the max setting only moments into my workout which parallels what I do with my small Lasko. The extra narrow flow works fine with my placement and still hits my head, face and upper chest as well as my Lasko.

I was a bit annoyed with the similarity to the old fan and that this wasn’t notably better. Perhaps I had my expectations set too high, but this is just a good blower fan, comparable to the smaller Lasko’s, and not on par with the bigger ones. I may try one more workout with it, but I think this fan is either going back or getting gifted to a local friend that could benefit from a proper blower fan over a regular one.

Bummer @mcneese.chad - seems both of our experiments straying from Lasko were disappointing! The Pro Laskos, especially when <$70 seems like a sweetspot, no pun intended. I noticed other posts talking about a Lasko MAX Performance, which adds a wider air column and potentially more power, but seems like they are discontinued.
