EF launches coaching service with access to its staff and riders

Plus you can say you’re “coached by” EF Education powered by FancyFeast or PostalAnnex or PizzaSkateboards, et al

Most would still rather be coached by Chad despite his apathy to everything cycling adjacent.

Has anyone signed up to this yet. Interested to see some reviews.

How do they do that? Does it adapt on the fly (eg they have some sort of clever software solution), or do they just mean, you pick a plan that fits your requirements? I’d assume there isn’t a person looking at it and adapting it.

I have no idea, just quoted the marketing blurb for reference.

As mentioned, we need someone to actually hop in to that offering and see what it has. I usually avoid this type of tagging, but will mention @tariqhali to see if he has any experience or interest. He has done some comparisons lately, and this might fit into that for evaluation.

hmm… haven’t seen anything on their website about how this works and what they mean by “adaptable”. Everything on their website references working with a coach rather than AI/ML type adaptable platform.

Thanks, wondering if www.join.cc is something you’ve looked at?

This is, straight up, a brilliant idea.

Cash in on your wealthier fans first. Not unlike, virtually every other sport on Earth.

So far, this just seems like a lot of people having sticker shock over the pricing. We really don’t know anything about it yet. Let’s wait for more details. I imagine once they’ve added some lower tier options, this could be a fantastic revenue stream for a pro team.

Kudos to EF for thinking laterally.

Imagine the dude with the 20K Pinarello at the café. “Who’s your coach”. Carapaz… Really? Really…

You really think that isn’t going to hype up some dentists?

I’m already looking forward to MVDP coaching me.

“What’s my training today Mathieu?” Same as mine. 10x1m intervals at 10w/kg. Cool?

No problem, I’ll smash em :joy: :joy: :joy:

Two days later… “How’d the intervals go”?

Tumbleweeds…

Almost all the professional athletes turned coaches that I’ve known personally and from a social-media distance have acquired their knowledge of training via osmosis. i.e. picked up training philosophies and methods from their more deeply “educated” coaches.

Sometimes they carry on with study once they have knocked back the training hours to back up the knowledge they have. As above, most people that pick these coaches are just happy to be trained by x-name. Maybe they get the opportunity to ride with them, certainly they can provide some high level tactical information some coaches can’t.

Doesn’t make them bad coaches at all. They’ll get found out pretty quickly once asking money for their advice though. The EF athletes have a huge leg up in this regard still having access to the EF coaches who are also bought in on selling the “system”.

How can they offer this so cheaply?

In a lot of cases the “been there, done that” experience factor is more valuable than having learnt the latest “cutting edge” methods.

I don’t disagree with that. The best of that type, usually go and do some further learnings. Not to learn techniques/methods, but to be able to better describe what the affects are of what they are prescribing.

I think the risk with ex-pros as coaches is that they themselves are typically fast responders with fantastic recovery, and might not fully understand how much average people struggle with accumulated load and recovery. Not saying that they can’t learn that, just that their experience of training (and that of their teammates etc) is likely quite different from a working 50 year old with kids.

No I have not looked into this one yet.

I see this all the time with people here in Sweden who get old pros as coaches. They prescribe either crazy long sessions, or really odd ones that might not apply for the athlete they are coaching.

And as an amateur, these guys go blindly with what their coaches are prescribing because they themselves are fast on the bike…

Yes , I’m with you there. I bought a Caterham (kit car derived from the Lotus 7) costing around 29K (GBP) and I have learnt the skills to be a racing driver in it.
The Elite EF coaching plan is attractive, but for someone like myself there would only be marginal gains over what I can do with TR + some coaching advice when required.
One problem I see is ,in order to justify the expense and get the most out of what’s on offer, a big red flag is looming called R-E-D-S.
Sadly the younger rider, who has ambitions to be a pro, is unlikely to be able to afford this plan.
In our club we have some very talented youngsters.
One has recently started riding for St Perrans Team (based in Cornwall)
Others are coached by our team coach and doing very well in Road /Cross, and MTB

But good luck to EF , they’re a good bunch !

$225 pcm is the lowest tier now, that brings it into ‘your local coach’ level pricing, pretty competitive https://www.teamefcoaching.com/pricing/

Looks like they just added a service like Fascat’s Optimize for $20USD/month, as well. They’re using Today’s Plan rather than TrainingPeaks to get to Zwift/Garmin/Wahoo/etc., but I’m sure that’ll work fine. They call their plans “dynamic” which can, of course, mean a whole lot of things in marketing-speak, but they also say they adapt to a variety of factors. You also get access to a content hub, monthly webinars, etc.

I’m pretty contented with my current setup so this is the rare service I won’t volunteer to be a guinea pig for, but I’m curious if anyone’s taking the plunge or knows more.

I also noticed that and it had me curious about what adapt actually means… and how it works.

A while ago I watched this dudebro’s series on his sponsored invitation to join EF Coaching training camp in Girona and:

  • Now I can’t stand the guy;
  • Silently shouted “nope!” and “citation needed!” at least 20 times;
  • Wouldn’t want anything to do with this project.

Re Lachlan and EF’s alt tour et al, after watching Rapha’s Gone Racing documentary and the leviathan-sized privilege exhibited by all partied involved, I have a hard time believing that’s the way to go. Of course I might be wrong and they might yet make a killing and get great sponsors through these ventures, but other than Rapha and their usual crowd I really don’t think it’ll resonate well.

I’m always up for a good hate watch, and so I am back to say thank you, this hit the spot.
