I have these wheels. Really great alloy tubular for the price. Though I had to modify the logos a bit because I have a Crux.
I love it!
They did seem to be a good āmiddle groundā of budget v.s. performance. If I really like them, I could see myself grabbing a second set.
Thatās what I did. Found a barely used set with Limus glued on and rotors for $400. The tires had a ton of life left so it was a no brainer.
Thereās a pair on eBay right now with photos juuuuust vague enough that I canāt decide what condition I think theyāre in.
Weāll see how long I can hold offā¦
PSI Questions! What do you run? This could almost be itās own threadā¦
Iām 185lbs, tubeless, run 27/29 in dry, 23/25 in mud.
I went to watch a CX race in north west England to see what it was like in 2018. Ben Turner was racing as a teenager in the Senior/U23 race (I think he was riding for Correndon Circus at the time). He just annihilated everyone. Might have been the same race you referenced.
For folks in NorCal Sac CX just opened up registration for their upcoming season. Always a fun series and a great vibe at all these races.
Cyclocross in Portland, OR starts up in force next weekend. Very stoked. Iāll be racing cat 4 and SS, both on my singlespeed because itās the bike I have lol.
Iām mostly going to try to do the trophy cup, but my work is pretty unpredictable, so Iāll scoop up whatever races I can get to in the three series we have around here.
This is something that Iām wanting to figure out. Iām coming from a TT background but going into my first season of racing CX this fall and I havenāt found āgoodā info on proper tire pressure.
Iām a bit lighter than you, Abe, and trying to find the right pressure.
From next weekend, one race per week(end) for the next 20 weeks.
Bar Christmas. And I think thereās a gap in January somewhere.
Too much? Letās see, some will get cancelled anyway.
First race of the season ended in pre-ride. Slightly sloping off-camber turn with lots of slick roots, which I hit with my weight off center. That put me in the dirt on said roots. Luckily the shifter and maybe handlebars broke instead of me. This is the second time Iāve fallen hard turning on a downhill off-camber turn where I hit a bump which knocks me off center. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I think that is definitely the best for a muddy race. Not sure that applies to dry and bumpyā¦I usually drop it just until things feel rightā¦when the choppiness fades away.
I am running tubuless baby limus 33 this year on carbon hoops with cores. Debated going 35 or 38 as a masters racer, but had the 33 from last season and didnāt get a chance to use them, so wanted to try them out. Feel light and roll nicely but good traction on the little off road training I have had. Typically run around 22/24 psi F/R.
I have a gravel wheelset though that might try as well - 38 gravel grinders - which would work well for dry conditions (having a file tread centrally and then knobs on edges).
Iāve seen some alloy tubular sets out there and been tempted just for the tubular part ā my old AL rim brake cross bike had carbon tubulars and they felt awesome (but not so awesome to make me favor that bike over my carbon disk AXS XPLR bike
I know on the Challenge website it states that a Baby Limus TLR should only be used with a maximum rim internal width of 23mm, I gather this is because it would slightly change the shape of the tyre and mean less tread on the outer part of the tyre, which is a bit more important in CX compared to gravel. The wheels I am using are some Giant SX-2 disc.
Would it really make a difference in your opinion?
To note, would adding inserts make a difference to the shape of the tyre and how it fits? I know they enable to run lower pressures and add some sidewall stability, but ultimately if it doesnt work that great, I will splash out on a tub wheelset and tyres instead.
TIA.
I put inserts into my tyres for a few weeks and didnāt like the feeling at all. It made the sidewalls stiff and the tyres felt unresponsive. Iād definitively not put inserts into a mud tyre that you want to run low pressure. Maybe with a more gravel tyre on hard, rocky races, theyād be ok.
What do you mean by āunresponsive?ā Iās think mud is the best application for inserts, where youāre trying to run as low a pressure as possibleā¦
You want the tyre to deform, and with the insert in, it doesnāt. Cornering, off camber riding etc felt really bad.
Works now.
This race was 2 hours away, but wisconsin race in waterloo was also 2 hours away and much more interesting terrain so I went up there.
I am a diehard tubular fan, but decided to try tubeless this year with inserts. I was skeptical as I really didnāt think anything could come close to how great tubulars are for cx. Iāve been pleasantly surprised with the feeling and grip with tubeless + inserts. While it doesnāt feel exactly like a tubular, I honestly feel like my grip is better. I havenāt gotten down to the pressures I typically ran with tubulars, but have been slowly dropping with great success. Currently at 22psi at 81kg. Running the same tires from tubular to tubeless (Vittoria Drys at 33mm). I doubt Iāll glue up tubulars again, which, for me, is heresy.
