Crankset options for BB30 CAAD10

I’ve been recently getting back into cycling and want to get a new crankset for my 2013 CAAD10 to get lower gears for climbing. Secondary goals are to move to 165 mm crank arms (from 170 mm) and to reduce weight (current crankset is about 760 g).

My current crankset has a 130 BCD, so I don’t think I can install more compact rings than the 53/39 it has currently. I also have a short cage rear derailleur, so I can’t run anything larger than an 11-28 on the back, which I’m already doing.

That leaves me with either getting a new rear derailleur, or a new crankset, and I’m hoping I can “kill a few birds with one stone” by picking up a new crankset.

The problem is I’m having trouble figuring out what’s compatible with the bike. BB30 cranksets are hard to find, and the ones I’ve seen have longer spindles than my current crankset. I’ve heard that BB386EVO may fit with an adapter / spacer, and I’ve also seen that there are conversion kits for 24 mm spindles as well.

Advice on what my options are would be really appreciated!

Are you planning on keeping your current bottom bracket? If you are ok with getting a new bottom bracket, you can run pretty much any crank you want. I use a token ninja BB to run a Shimano crank on my Caad13. Wheels manufacturing also makes bottom brackets.

I’d also vote to put a 24mm BB in there and pick up a 50/34 crankset. :mechanic:

bb386 is is basically a long bb30 so will fit (and is realistically your native crankset).
You do want to check if you caad10 has the asymmetric bb30 (bb30a). That is a little longer and true bb30 (short) cranks will not fit.
The best crank you could get would be a Quarq sram bb30 long crank and stick some NTN bb30 bearings in your frame. Reliable power metre and pretty lightweight and you get to use branded bearings in the cheapest way possible.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I ended up buying a 386evo crankset and the FSA 386evo to bb30 shim adapters. This seems to have worked perfectly, and it was the cheapest option since I didn’t need to replace the bottom bracket ($160 for a new FSA crankset and the adapters).

I went from 170 mm cranks to 165 mm and am loving it so far as a 5’6" rider. I’m lean, but on the 170 mm I’d often be kneeing myself in the chest when riding in the drops. That’s substantially alleviated on the 165 mm cranks, which surprised me since they’re only 5 mm shorter.

Anyways, the 386evo crankset seems to be working great on my CAAD 10 so far, but I’ll report back if I run into any issues with it.

Not really much help, but I’ve got a Black Inc EVO with SISL2 cranks and apparently Cannondale no longer makes the chainrings. I’ve taken a punt on a Shimano chainring compatible replacement spider (Stone Bike Chainrings and I’ll throw on a pair of 52/36 rings to replace the current 53/39.

Praxis do the Alba available down to 160mm and in sub compact 48/32 I’ve got that paired together with there bb on my supersix. Only down side is the chainrings come as a pair and a pretty much the same price as the crankset it’s self.
Campagnolo Chorus is available in 165 in compact and sub compact just exspensive or Centaur but is 170mm and only 50/34.
Specialites TA do smaller outer and inner rings across different BCD and brands. Miche got you covered on the rear they do cassettes starting from 14T and 16T might be worth looking for a cheaper long cage derailuer.
The likes of Wheels Manufacturing do thread together BB for pressfit 24mm axles for shimano I also used that on a Supersix Evo no problems.

You don’t happen to remember which BB you bought? Assume they’re both broadly similar, just bearing spec that changes.

Cannondale BB30A Bottom Brackets

I let the bikeshop sort if sorry so cant remember which one they used, I’ve got the frame in the shed so will see if I can see any markings on it.

All good, curious more than anything. Cheers

I kept the stock BB and got FSA EE085 adapters that slide in to fit a 24mm Shimano spindle.

Now you mention it my old Scalpel had those (or similar). I might see if they fit.

Two friends of mine tell me they’re going to creak, but I took a gamble since it’s a trainer/beater bike

I remember they used to creak occasionally on the MTB, a quick pull down and grease fixed it though. From memory they’re a bit of a loose fit, which probably makes them more prone to creaking.

I’m still using a Rotor 3d + from 2013 that has seen 4 different bikes and several chain rings. Bought it with a Power2Max back in the days and both are still working just fine. Some good deals for used ones out there.
