COVID-19: US races/cycling events that have been cancelled

Won’t be long for the 2021 stuff to begin to fall as well.

USAC was supposed to have an update on Cross and Marathon Nationals today…anxiously waiting (though certainly not expecting good news).

Here in Aus my 2020 A race was pushed to September (with the option of transferring to May 2021, which is what I did), and now both Sep '20 and May '21 have been cancelled.

Yup…all but inevitable. I resigned myself to this months ago. I still don’t think most people have really comprehended how long it will be until things are “normal” (if we can ever get there).

We will get to normal again, but it will take much longer than people think.

Dakota 5-0 cancelled this morning.

I really don’t think there will be races next year either, and a lot of friends that are promoters agree.

I think we will have races, just not what we are used to. Time trails or “TT like” events I think will start to show up and that may be all we get for the foreseeable future. Kind of like golf, 4 people tee off together and hundreds play over the course of the day but not everyone starts on the first hole at the same time.

I wouldn’t mind real life style tt races but I hate when they try to do virtual races. As if Strava and zwift dont already exist to do that very thing.

Definitely a no go for me too. I did one and realized I’m not a virtual bike racer (in Sagan’s voice).

Local friend put together a “solo stage race” with all automated timing to see if the community would enjoy it. Stage 2 of 3 completes today and reviews have been positive overall.

NJ Solo Stage Race with info on BikeReg for folks interested in the format and details.

Description: The SSR is a race that will encompass three stages over three consecutive weekends. It will include a flat TT course, a moderately hilly road course and a rolling road course. Riders will have a set period of time each weekend to complete the stage(8am-2pm each day). You can ride in the morning or afternoon. You can ride on Sat or ride on Sunday, it’s up to you. All stages will be completed solo to maintain physical distancing during these trying times. Riders will have the option of entering all 3 stages and being scored in the GC or, you can also choose to race 1 or 2 of the stages. Daily overall standings will be posted for each stage as well as an overall GC. There will also be a KOM/QOM competition. Timed hill segments during Stages 2 and 3 will be added together to determine the KOM/QOM winners.

Timing and Results: Timing chips are mailed to entrants and results are all electronic at my.raceresult.com

When the votes are in after stage 3 will determine if the community wants more of these events. I suspect it will be a yes and we’ll see a few more in the fall. Probably single stage though.

Interesting idea. Do you know why he didn’t do this via Strava segments?

Stage 1 is one of our popular ten mile TT courses. Flat road running along the Delaware River. The full 10 is definitely on strava. But… set the start point just short of the ten course for safety reasons. About 200 yards from the normal starting point, there is a parking lot which provides river access. It is getting extremely high use this year.

The other stages, he just picked what he thought were long and safe sections without considering strava. Someone will go and put them up now I bet.

The overall idea has gone on well with racers. We have a good TT scene and folks liked the idea of some competition without having to worry about crowds. The automated timing gear made it work well too.

GMSR (green mountain stage race) cancelled over the weekend. Not surprising in the least, but still sad. Everyone should come up here and do that one next year though, I’m biased but imo it’s the best long weekend on a bike out there.

The great Floridian Triathlon (1/3, 2/3 and full distance) have suspended registrations.
The city of Clermont, FL is putting a hold on sports gatherings.

The organizers still plan to hold the race as planed on October.

The Sprint Series is also cancelled…

Glad i didnt register for next week race…

COVID19 NOTICE:

8/3/2020: As COVID cases continue to rise across the United States, and Florida continues to be a coronavirus hot spot, we just learned the City of Clermont may soon prohibit events from taking place at city parks, buildings and venues until Florida enters phase three of its reopening plan. Although the official decision will not be made until the August 11 Clermont City Council meeting, we have made the necessary decision to pause registration for all remaining 2020 Clermont events. We have also decided to CANCEL this event. After conducting two successful and safe events since mid-June, it was a difficult decision to make. We believe it’s better to prioritize the safety of our racers, volunteers, staff, and community now, while we wait until conditions improve to resume racing. In the coming days we will email additional info and options to all racers registered for this event. Please understand this was a tough decision for us to reach, and we realize this announcement is not the news most of you want to hear. However, we must work together to keep everyone safe and healthy during this unprecedented time. Thank you for your patience and ongoing support. Be sure to follow us on Facebook for the latest updates.

USAC canceled Collegiate Track and Mountain Bike Nationals.

Here’s the post on FB and my question to them about CX and Marathon Nats:

Thanks for sharing. Such a bummer to see the list of races/events still being canceled or postponed. Hoping we can beat this pandemic soon!

USAC just needs to cancel everything for 2020…continually prolonging this is not helping anyone.

Marathon Nats 2020 - So long…

We have received notice from our Marathon Mountain Bike Nationals venue, Palo Duro Canyon State Park, that they are restricting the number of special event attendees due to the rise in COVID-19 cases. With the typical number of participants we see for this event, we will not be able to comply with the updated regulations. When considering this restriction along with other safety concerns, we have no choice other than to cancel Marathon Mountain Bike Nationals for this year.

Not surprised at all about Marathon Nats and I’d already removed it from my calendar way back when anyway.

Now for CX Nats…I’m not sure what to make of that. Jingle Cross is canceled, but not really, because now it will live on as CX Nats! Unless nothing has changed with respect to Covid by that time, in which case it will probably get canceled as well.

Ugh. More waiting to see what happens…
