That’s how I would place my bet! My speculation from a pure marketing point-of-view: new x40 hardware will be first to support ClimbPro w/o a route. Wait 6 months if you have an older x30.
The “real” innovation that Garmin needs is the ability to completely configure a device via its mobile app or via the website (sync’d over via Garmin Express). My bet is that something like this will also come along with the x40 series, and not get back-ported to support the x30 series, as a way to induce people to upgrade.
That’s coming, Fenix7/etc are first to have phone config.
K2 will have implemented many better things by then. Their development cycle is pretty fast as I’ve stated in other Hammerhead threads. I think this pretty much ends the debate over who does climber better. ![]()

Did you watch the video? Ray Maker is like “looks good” but is often wrong.
No, I watched @gpl top notch video. Although dcrainmaker material is top notch too so if I get time I will check it out later. But I did do a ride with the update. Great job HH!
It can’t be too far off can it? USB-C and the improved GPS chips being key updates. Problem is that the global chip shortage is pinching manufacturers that aren’t ordering really big runs of custom Silicon.
I used this today. It worked really well!
It did end a climb early, but overall, it popped up at the right time, showed the elevation profile and my location in the climbs, and placed them well, too.
Both on-road and off road.
Color me impressed!
I’ve always been head unit agnostic, I’ve had an Edge 510 and an 810, then all three of the ELMNT computers with Roam as my current.
I really want this climb functionality! Is Wahoo just asleep at wheel? I hope the HH update spurs on Garmin to up their game in this aspect.
Then I’ll get a 530 when you guys dump them for the 540 (assuming they make it backwards compatible).
Has anyone figured out how to manually specify climbs they want to show up? I’ve read you can kind of replicate this functionality by favoriting Strava segments (and since you can also create your own Strava segments, this could work) - but would this also work when following a route?
The outcome I want is to not rely on the auto-detect of climbs, because I think it’s pretty bad even when following routes, but rather select the climbs myself.
Thanks!
It’s something I intend to bring up when/if I see the garmin folks at Unbound.
Do you need to be following a course for ClimbPro to work, or do you just need to have the course saved on your Garmin?
I would like the climb prompts for an upcoming race, but not to follow course and get guidance
I think you need a course.
Course loaded and running. You can do a partial course, of the climb(s) only, and load it when approaching. Probably not something you want to mess with during a race, but its an option.
Thanks @HLaB and @WindWarrior
I might just use my memory. I don’t really want the distraction if something goes haywire with the course
I disabled it over a year ago as it got annoying with every short bump (sub 60s ) here triggering it and it taking over the screen.
You can adjust the sensitivity of Climb Pro to how large the climbs are.
I’ll have to look at it sometime as it would have been useful in Tenerife or Calpe with proper climbs. I thought I’d turned it back on for them but lol, all it would say is “Climb Starting”, not how long or its grade ![]()
Huh? Which Garmin do you have?
4 days ago I did a climbing ride on a 530, and here is the Climb Starting screen just seconds before the start:
and 10 seconds after the start:
Thanks, I just looked that up in the manual and didn’t realize the 1040 has that control on the Activity Profile.
Do you have a 1040 or something else?
Just turned on my 530 and its not available on v9.5. Hoping it comes with an update.
I’ve got the 1030. When I turned it back on using the shop tour guide gps files for the climbs in the Spanish mountains it would just momentarily say "Climb Starting ", it would have been useful to know the climb was 3miles at 6% and how close to the top I was. Perhaps it was the file types. I can’t remember what they were but they’d automatically open in the Garmin Connect app and it was just a case of ‘send to device’.
