Chamois Cream is a rip off?

I’m not crediting him with pioneering its use. From most of the reception here, it’s still not widely known.

I don’t see the difference between chamois cream and Vaseline. And Vaseline is like $2 for a tub.

Vaseline just provides lubrication but doesn’t have any of the other antiseptic or hydrating properties. I used to use Vaseline in the old days when we had real chamois inserts. They’d get as stiff as a board after a wash and drip dry.

I credit Horner because he brought it to people’s attention via youtube. I learned about it from a link posted on this forum. For all we know, he has been using it for decades and he probably got the tip from someone else. I was racing USCF like 30-35 years ago and never once heard anyone talk of Noxzema before. I don’t even recall spendy chamois cream back then but maybe they existed.

I remember hearing that riders on the real leather pads were using some kind of animal sourced grease or fat too. YUCK, but if it saves the skin ‘down there’, bacon grease could be delivered from heaven. But just the idea now seems so    And we’d want to avoid dogs, not attract them…

Probably just lanolin, which is pretty soothing and still used today by nursing mothers with cracked nipples. Assos chamois cream is a lot cheaper though than lanolin…

I don’t want to think about assos on my cracked nipples!!

Bag Balm for 3+ hr rides.
Just keep the tin upright and in a zip-lock. It leaks when hot…

It will ruin jerseys and bibs. Since it’s petroleum based, getting it on your cycling kit is going to ruin it, don’t ask me how I know…

Chamois cream wash out with water, so its safe for the clothes as well.

I’ve had no issues with ruining bibs. Although I only occasionally use them for long rides. So I guess this could be the case. Long rides inside I just switch bibs after a couple hours.

I use Chamois Butter for every ride and don’t have any saddle sore issues. In the grand scheme of things in cycling, it’s not that expensive. I haven’t noticed any staining on my bibs.

I’ll go on to add that I especially use this for my trainer rides. I’ve made that mistake before and it’s not pretty.

I’ve used ASSOS cream on horribly chapped cheeks, and it actually feels better, it’s soothing actually.

Have been using Battles Udder Cream for a few weeks now.

It does the job, but is quite sticky when first applied and takes 10-15 mins of riding to feel like a normal cycling specific chamois cream in my opinion.

I think I am converted, but only time will tell.
