Canyon Bikes Experiences?

Aeroad CF SLX Disc AXS
I want to order this bike but have a major issue with size:

My measurements are:
Height 180cm
Inside leg 88.5 cm
Existing bike Scott Cr1 seat height 81cm

I am a MEDIUM in Canyon pps sizing system. The medium is for person 178cm - 184cm. So it should fit me.
If I change to inside leg measure to 90cm in Canyon pps size system then it goes to Large. So the seat post should go high enough.

However the Aeroad seat post does not go high enough. On the geometry chart Max height is 794mm. I need a seat post height of 815mm. So either I have really long legs and or their seat post is short and does not match their inside leg measurement…mmmm!

But if I go for a LARGE - the reach is a problem.
I cam reduce the cockpit stem to 90mm - but still might be an issue.

Anyone else how has an Aeroad that is 180cm tall, inside leg 88.5cm…what size do you get and was the fit?

Ok, so you do have pretty long legs for your height. Iirc normal inseam to height percentage is 46-48; you’re almost 50.

A longer seatpost might address your problem or it may be the case that this particular model simply isn’t a very good match for you in any size (I have that issue with Cannondale).

I’d ring/email Canyon customer service in the first instance, and see what they say. It may be that you need to spend a bit of time on geometrygeeks or similar to work out which bikes suit your metrics.

I asked if they sell longer seatposts for the new Aeroad and the answer was no! I’m not really in the market but one can window shop haha. I’m 6’5" and the XL geo would be perfect but the seat post would be about 1.5 cm too low.

Yes Canyon have been very helpful and responsive.
But no answer as to why their measurement system allows for inside leg of 89cm as medium, but the seat post height only goes to 794mm - which is not very high.
the only answer is go for large and reduce stem length…but the reach is quite stretched out.

Yeah, 184cm tall and riding a Aeroad 2xl. Moved from a large Merida scultura after a bike fit. Just moved the seat as far forward as possible for the reach.

Having just ordered my first Canyon bike, I was a bit miffed to learn that Canyon won’t allow you to select the stem length or bar width on the included cockpit (the H31 Ergocockpit in my case). Does anyone know if there is a forum or other place where folks buy/sell/trade these cockpit items. I’d rather not drop $400 on a new one, but maybe that’s just the price you pay for ordering one of these.

Yeah, it is quite frustrating because, IMO< they spec a VERY short stem for a given size. For me, when I ordered my Aerorad SLX 8.0, it came with a 90mm stem (size Sm), but I needed a 110-120m stem. Luckily the model I ordered had alloy bars and stem, not the integrated ones, so it was an easy swap for me.

There is a factory in China that sells Canyon integrated bars / stems direct, but i have zero idea if they are the same factory as the official one, or if they adjust the quality of the bars for the ones they sell on the interwebs. I think I paid ~$115 for my set. Never had any issues with them and rode them for over a year. Finally had to swap them out when I changed over to my current FSA drivetrain.

I thought they allow you to exchange after its been delivered? I suggest you reach out to their support folks

When I inquired about this back in 2018 when I got my Aeroroad, the only option was to buy another cockpit form them. No exchanges were offered.

It may have changed since the, I don’t know.

Support told me the best they could do was offer me 10% off a new cockpit - bringing the price down from $400 to $360

I think the bikes are still a good value for money

I decided back in 2015 against the aero road because I always change my stem length and was concerned by that not being possible (foc) with the Aeroroad.

On a plus point I have always found the customer service amazing. I own a an endurance AL 8.0 for winter riding and ultimate slx 8.0di2 for summer. The other day I realised the saddle bag had worn my seat post away! Probably from grit etc building up and running over 2 years on the AL. They have sent me free of charge a brand new S23 post that would have cost me £125. They certainly did not have to do that!

It is pressfit BB,once hambini said Canyon frame tolerances were not the best…

BTW no stock at all on medium range bikes. Are brands not interested in restoclking cheapest versions so we feel pushed to spend more?

Screw together bottom brackets are great. I used the Wheels Manufacturing version back when I had an Endurace and now on my Cutthroat and they work great with no creaking.

I’m not a fan of pressfit BB’s, but almost 4 years since I got my Canyon and I have not had any problems. You can also get a BB that threads together for it, as noted above.

I don’t put a lot of stock into anything Hambini says, never have. He is a ruthless self-promoter who finds minor issues and flames them into looming catastrophes.

He is also a misogynistic pig. FTG.

I would have preferred a threaded BB on my Ultimate CF SLX — but honestly, the pressfit has been just fine over thousands of miles. Zero issues.

My Canyon (1 bike, 1 rider, YMMV) has been outstanding.

99.9% of press fit problems have stemmed from improper installation. Proper is usually gluing the cups in place with the correct Loctite retaining compound. It also helps to press in the cups square and then let them dry 24 hours in their perfectly square position.

Lots of bike shops early on didn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t follow these simple instructions. Sometimes the manufacturers gave contradictory instructions like using grease. Grease quiets things down but also facilitates the cups moving and eventually the grease will squirt out between the cups and the frame.

Yes, there were a few bad frame designs in the past.

That is simply not true…”a lot”, “many”, maybe even a “majority”. 99.9%….nope.

Specialized frames were notoriously bad in the in mid 20-teens, for example.

PF BB’s were great in concept and even in small production. But the tolerances were just too difficult to maintain in mass production. It happens….the mistake the industry made was sticking with it long past when they should have.

Thank you everybody for your valuable answers. I cleared some concerns about PF. I’d rather a Vitus Vitesse EVO, love that design but Canyon Ultimate seems more likely to be restocked and it’s a bang for the buck in the climbing disc brake scene,

It’s the value for money that keeps me going back to Canyon. My first Canyon was a 2019 Neuron CF9 trail bike and that has been great. About half the price of an equivalent spec Santa Crux etc. The design and finish is top notch too. Just what you’d expect from Germanic engineering! I also like that they usually spec DTSwiss carbon wheel sets on their higher-end bikes rather than in-house wheels like most other brands.

Just bought a Canyon Endurace CF SL8 and again spec for spec it is hard to beat on value. Saved nearly £3k over an equivalent Specialized, Trek etc. Can’t say I’ve had much experience of Canyon customer service (haven’t needed their advice yet) but £3k in hand goes a long way to smoothing out any potential issues!

I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another Canyon at this point. I would say they are now top of my list whenever a new bike beckons.
