Cannabis Thread (CBD)

I find that cannabis helps me stay on the trainer and push through intervals in erg mode when i might otherwise get off. It also helps me get on the trainer every day as I can use the pre-ride coffee and vape ritual as a bit of an incentive. Since I started on this program my ability to consistently follow the TR plans has gone way up.

Very true! I hate going overboard. I’m experienced and can handle higher doses but there’s a limit and then it has the exact reverse effect I’m going for. It’s worth figuring out, but you’re right it can be challenging. I’ve learned that I’d rather have little effect, v. too much.

Agreed!

Do you have any recipes you can share? I usually buy mine but pretty hard on the wallet for a daily user.

You can do a search for how to make cannabutter or canna oil which should point you in a good direction. Generally, you’ll be extracting cannabinoids from the buds into a fatty butter or oil which will then be used to infuse your food of choice.

If you’re interested in a tincture, search for how to make green dragon tincture. This is generally a bit more dangerous as you’ll be boiling alcohol which has a low flash point but nothing that can’t be done with a good amount of ventilation & some common sense safety precautions.

I sent you a DM as to not spam the board with links. The key thing is a quality decarboxylation and then the medium you choose to use, oil, or alcohol is whatever you choose.

I’ve had great success using time v. heat for alcohol tincture recipe. I broke a glass jar doing the double boiler method (my fault) but I lost quite a bit of flowers. I just add the required amount of ever clear and let it rest for a week over the buds, shaking occasionally. Anecdotally - I don’t think heat is necessary in that step.

I didn’t want to believe the hype, but, after using some CBD lotion for my knee, I’m absolutely a “believer”. I had chronic knee pain for 3 months, and tried everything I could think of. Even “not using” my knee didn’t make it go away. Used CBD lotion; and literally overnight, was able to go from not squatting for 3 mo’s to squatting completely pain free. I currently utilize CBD only edibles at night to help with recovery. Zero issues, and the few friends I’ve shared this experience with can also attest to the ability of CBD to be a recovery aide.
I like the effects of high CBD strains but unfortunately every high CBD strain I’ve tried also taste and smells very bad so I stay away from them now. I have yet to find one that’s tolerable I just use CBD oil. Working on getting my medical card Medical Marijuana Card in Oakland (CA) – Online Guide 2022
I would like to try new products for my pain :disappointed_relieved:

CBD has multiple uses. Most athletes use it for the paid relief it can give. CBD research is still in its early stages, however there are many arguments to suggest that it could be helpful for certain individuals with arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), chronic pain and other painful conditions.

Many people live by edibles, however there are also so many different forms you can take CBD in; oils (drops and spray), capsules, creams/gels/lotions/, vapes, isolate, drinks etc. All the above are sufficient ways to use CBD, and have proven positive effects on people. CBD doesn’t and shouldn’t get you high! Its the THC that gets you high. If any of you are looking for more info on CBD you should check out the website I was referred too called Mellow

The fact that this is illegal in certain countries is ridiculous as CBD is only beneficial, unlike other things that are legal in most countries like, alcohol and tobacco.

Does anybody know where I can read info about CBD? some website or online magazine

I want ot find any scientific research about CBD and its inflence on human body, can someone share a link to website or something?

My 2 cents: Just started using Cannabis this year after not using since college. I made a tincture, so no harm to the lungs. I typically like to take some after my long rides and find I’m more able to eat what I need to and rest. I’m hyper aware of any soreness or fatigue and rest when otherwise I may push through and work around the house.

Guys, why are you so negative about cannabis? Cannabis is used in medicine and I agree that it is very addictive but it helps to treat a lot of diseases and it is more safe than alcohol. I personally used CBD oil to fight drug addiction. I started using drugs several years ago and it was a very bad period in my life, but then I decided to change and look for methods for treatment. I was told that the best way is CBD oil and I decided to use vape with CBD for this. I found a great vape with cbd at https://knockoutcbd.com/cbd-product-category/cbd-vape-pen/. I smoked vape for five years and it completely helped me get rid of drug addiction!

This is the podcast episode that got me interested in CBD. As a personal experience, it has significantly helped me with my Ironman training on recovery days. Here are some notes about the interview

  • Although CBD seems to support sleep duration, there is not yet data on sleep architecture (i.e., stages of sleep, duration)
  • Tinctures might be better. There are advantages to sublingual water soluble delivery:
    • “It avoids first pass metabolism. It gets much more of the active drug into the bloodstream and to be distributed throughout the body. So in theory, you could actually lower the levels of drug that are necessary”
    • The optimal cocktail of sleep according to Dr. Kimless: 10mg of CBD to 1mg THC
      • See Entourage Effect where presence of THC along with CBD could be synergistic.

I have been using an 18:1 tincture formula, taking 9mg:0.5mg an hour before bed. Anything more I am groggy in the morning. Sleep duration is indeed longer and pronounced for me. I check my oura ring every morning, and I do not see anything changes in deep or rem as fas as I could tell.

With that said, I have recommended this to my father who has sleep problems, and he does not like it at all. No noticeable effect on sleep duration or quality with a slightly nauseous feel (no nausea for me).

A good friend sent me this while I was searching for the benefits of CBD. I think it’s pretty informative.

Because smoking cigarettes has never been shown to have any adverse health effects? :man_facepalming:

I have consumed cannabis off and on since high school. A LOT of it. Given my addictive personality, and how tremendously much I enjoy it, it’s been a hard relationship for me.

About ten years ago I started noticing horrible withdrawal symptoms when I would try to stop. I would be nauseous for days, almost unable to eat any food, and in general feel like crap. This has only gotten worse over time.

Now I have to limit my consumption to special occasions. By now it’s mostly limited to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and my birthday. But whenever I start around these times I sometimes go for a week or two at a time, continually increasing my consumption until its crazy high, and then have to stop and go through withdrawal again. But, I love it, so I don’t know that I could ever completely give it up. It really helps me mentally and helps me to put things into perspective that I am not able to sober. I also get super creative and come up with all sorts of amazing ideas for both my career and personal life that I never would have otherwise.

From a performance perspective, I have a hard time believing THC can help anyone, but I guess everyone is different. CBD might help with recovery based on some studies I suppose. But for me, THC makes me enjoy riding more, but also makes me ride substantially slower in general. Especially when I am regularly consuming it.

And anyone who suggests that smoking it doesn’t impact your respiratory system is fooling themselves.

Yep, me too. And I’ve also had to change my relationship with it. Smoking it daily wasn’t working for me, I could feel it impacting my riding, and I was really starting to hate how it made my lungs feel particularly the next day. (I’m countering a point I made earlier in this thread, I have changed my mind at how much it effects me). Luckily I don’t get any of the withdrawal symptoms you mention but when I stop, I can plan on at least one or two nights of absolutely shit sleep. Now I still take it daily but use a pretty dialed homemade tincture or olive oil or coconut oil infusion. I’m still concerned about the long term effects of this habit, but now at least my lungs are healthier. I still smoke on occasion, and when I do I notice how addicting smoking is, that immediate mind altering effect is very nice. Still, in general I do now prefer the slow ramp up that ingesting it has given me. It’s a pretty different and more mellow experience (you’ve got to NAIL the dosing).

I’m just glad I lost my taste for alcohol entirely.

But yeah, cannabis doesn’t really bring much to the table in terms of performance, although us stoners might make a case for recovery. I know some pretty type A roadies who now use it almost daily, I was equal parts surprised, and not when I learned this. People are tired of drinking and want something that’s relaxing.

I enjoy every method of ingestion and all are equally addicting to me over time and all of them cause withdrawal. I just don’t know how to keep the dosage small and I just keep ramping it up until it’s out of control which is why I have to just do the on/off thing.

This is the first year that I’ve ridden for more than a couple of months during the summer, and I never really cared about performance or even knew what FTP was. After a long 4.5 month training season and a couple of weeks of smoking after my bday in July, I couldn’t believe how horrible my cardio was. It took a full month of riding hours every day to recover most of it.

Just two days after my bday, when I had been at the best fitness I had ever been in my life, I did the Lake Tahoe loop with my friend, eating edibles along the way. I was both unable to put out high sustained power and terrified of the traffic when approaching 30mph. It certainly made me much slower. I had a hard time keeping it over 200w when I was riding 260+ usually the entire two months prior.

This whole experience has made me rethink when I can even consume again. Might skip Thanksgiving and just do Christmas/NYE next, but with COVID and all the smoke I might cave for Tday as well.
