Had fun creating a “road race - getting faster for group rides” plan today.
3 workouts per week. 2 high intensity, and 1 endurance workout per week. Depending on what high intensity workout I set as my weekly hard group ride, the other high intensity workout atleast in base phase changes between either SS or OU workout so selecting group ride on Monday it will suggested OU on Thursday and Thursday it will be Sweet Spot on Monday.
I would expect that in “base” phase atleast with only one structured workout per week it would be Sweet Spot as high intensity or a combination or sweet spot or OU. I would expect the system to find the proper workout for me and I shouldnt start thinking of if it is 1st or 2nd high intensity workout I should replace with a hard group ride.
You used to be able to move hard days around if you wanted your threshold workout early or late in the week, for example, but now, with TR AI, I think it manages that for you.
I think it does make a difference as to which day your hard group ride is on, and we’re probably picking the TR workout that best fits with your schedule.
Though I’d assume that it would give you the SS workout on Thursday if you have a hard group ride on Monday, not the other way around.
Sorry not sure I explained me correctly: Depending on what “hard intensity” workout I choose to replace with my hard group ride I get a totally different training plan.
here are the base phases for each version. If I select 1 or other as hard group ride:
With the changing of time duration of the HARD group ride… it alters the plan format. When things change… the plan changes. makes sense
Thoughts on what the AI is thinking (from my ‘coaches’ perspective):
Knowing you have in the first screenshot a 75min HARD 94TSS ride on Thursday the Monday ride is a conservative sweetspot work.
Second screenshot you shorten that Hard effort to 60min Group TSS 70 Monday, so then it puts priority to a harder Effort on Thursday.
So seems like it’s putting priority to a good workout for Thursday when more time is available, also when your next ride is only a 1hr easy ride, so don’t need to wrry about fatigue in following days to hit key workout.
Not sure if you are flagging this as an error due to it being OverUnders in base phase? Need more % of FTP if only three days of riding
So it appears that rather than getting both types of workouts (Sweet Spot and Threshold in Base, and Threshold and VO2 in Build) in each week, you’re only getting one. Is that right?
In your first screenshot, it looks like you’re getting two SS workouts a week, in the second and third, you’re getting two threshold, and in the fourth, you’re getting two VO2 Max.
No I get only 1 sweet spot per work OR a OU threshold workout per week depending on what day is picked for the high intensity. The 2 other days per week are “hard group ride” and “Endurance”.
I would expect for example “base phase” with only 1 workout per week, to be a sweet spot workout nomatter if I choose to have that as the first or second high intensity workout (monday or thursday).
Thanks for replyling. the duration doesnt matter I think. it will always select sweetspot for the 1st hard workout nomatter if I select 1, 75min or 2 hours. If I take thursday hard intensity workout and switch that with Monday hard intensity workout in plan builder I get OU threshold workout instead along with my hard group ride on thursday.
So it is just “which is best” when you only have 1 workout to pick. I would expect the system to choose the best one, but it doesnt seem to do that. So I guess the custom workout planner cant really be used much if you only do 1 structured workout per week?
Curious what does it give you if you just put it to all TR Workouts?
“Choose the best one, but it doesn’t seem to do that”
You seem pretty serious that SS is the best and only option for developing during base on 3rides 3hrs/wk… I’m not sure that is true or the only option. TR AI maybe has other things in store for your training. I
Short on time, intensity is going to drive improvements. So progressing in O/U workouts in base seems to tackle a good Sweetspot and Threshold blend that definitely delivers that.
If I choose 2 high intensity workouts per week in the base phase is 1 SS workout (always the first one of the week) and 1 OU threshold workout as the second one.
If I replace the second one with a hard group ride it will give me a sweet spot as the first workout of the week as my structured workout. if I replace the first one it will be an over/under workout as the second workout of the week.
If I switch the 2 workouts with eachother it will move sweetspot to Thursday instead of Monday. So there is no “AI” whatsoever in selecting the right type or workout for my plan and my fitness. It will always be either sweetspot or OU. I guess this would be similar situation to 2 vs 3 high intensity workouts? You could get 2 x sweet spot or 1x sweet spot + 1 x OU depending on what day you replace
but I guess the solution is that I keep 2 structured workouts per week and replace the one with a hard group ride the is most similar. This mostly means mostly replace the OU workout and keep the sweet spot in base phase in my base phase
What’s interesting is that if you make Monday a hard workout and Thursday a group ride, you can then drag and drop those days and swap them in Plan Builder and you’ll then have Sweet Spot on Thursdays.
So it seems that those cards in the schedule step of Plan Builder might still have specific workout types assigned to them.
I’ve just reported this to the team, but for now, just build the plan that’s most attractive to you. Also, don’t forget that you can click on any workout and change the training zone, and we’ll pick the best workout for you in that zone.
This might be useful in your case since you only have one hard, structured workout each week. You could do threshold one week and Sweet Spot the next to keep things interesting.
Exactly. Much better explanation than whatever I was trying to explain. “The cards har specific workouts assigned to them”
I’ll change whatever I feel is best for me. It would be really nice if in future Trainerroad would be able to suggest the most optimal workout types based on of you selecting 1,2 or 3 hard days per week
