Just riding along on my 303s and snapped a spoke. Was on a 200km ride, and half way round. Fortunately the wheel stayed pretty true and I just wrapped the broken spoke against another and completed the ride.
Thats only my second broken spoken in 20 years, The time before, wheel was so out of true it was ride over
But its weird when it happens, and makes me wonder if there are is any rhyme or reason to it?!
Yeah. IDK. Built a set of carbon mtb wheels and after ~1 yr, a spoke broke on a ride. Replaced it and I’ve been riding them for 7 years since without issue. ~15 years ago I was in a race and I fell over in a pileup at a slow point. I rode on without realazing my rear DR hanger got bent in and shifted the chain past the big cog into the spokes. Some months later I broke a spoke while riding. The chain had nicked some spokes when it went behind the cassette and created weak points. I replaced those and have ridden for many more years on that wheel without issue.
Lots of possible reasons, but often comes down to ‘bad luck’. If it’s not happening on a regular basis, replace and carry on
