Pretty normal no? Ramp/8 minutes not accurate, 20m or longer is better, ftp is a proxy for MLSS. Pretty standard concept of FTP and its use in training.
Yes. Pretty normal. I just enjoyed the part about discussing for many of their more experienced athletes they often don’t even have them test anymore which is what my coach, after a certain number of years, started to do with me. She would adjust my ftp based off, I assume either power numbers from rides/races and/or seeing me easily hit workout targets week after week and decide my ftp could be tweaked a bit.
I always hated ftp tests so was happy to have my ftp manually updated by my coach and now coming back to TR I will happily allow TR to just give me that number to train off of.
The coach probably has WKO and it calculates mFTP based on the power duration curve. The coach was probably giving you certain efforts in training to pad out the curve. Combined with race efforts, WKO will calculate a fairly good mFTP - definitely close enough for training.
as long as you are feeding it frequent all out efforts across the PDC.
Didn’t I just say that?
And actually, you only need a short duration, medium duration, and long duration effort and it doesn’t need to be frequent.
In my case, I certainly never worried too much about it as the efrorts in the workouts always felt correct for the type of workout.
But that’s why I had a coach. I didn’t want to think about those things.
Tons of reasons to have a coach. I was just pointing out that the coach has tools that work very well.
Sounds exactly like what TR is doing now. No need to test, no need to really care about the AIFTP number, it will just give us workouts based on and to work on our power curves at various durations.
Agree.
Yes. Another reason I like TR. I hate testing. Just want it to provide me appropriate workouts to be a stronge cyclist.
Training is testing and testing is training ![]()

I’m always underwhelmed by the evoq guys. The older dude is always super scatter brained and strays away on random stuff, and the young guy looks/talks like he just graduated high school and they both go into personal anecdotes way more than actual science or studies.
I haven’t listened to much from them
