Bike in shared flat

Moving together with SO.

Because of limited space in the cellar but mainly because I like the view of my bike I‘d like to keep another bike (besides the one on the trainer) in our flat. I see it as a bit of art, like a painting.
Also bike gets cleaned before taken inside (wipe frame and tires). (I do take some bikes into the current flat and I always clean them.)

Do you keep a bike in your flat? Where do you put it?
What is the take of your SO/family on this?

I use a Bike Nook vertical stand https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XXSHGWR?tag=track-ect-uk-326156-21&linkCode=osi&th=1&ascsubtag=ecSEP42xczjlmw9wplr (I see there’s a few similar products Our 10 Best Bike Nook Bicycle Stand in the UK - September 2023 | BestProductsReviews.co.uk)
I like the lack of space it takes up without drilling into the walls of a rented flat but I live alone.

I wouldn’t mind a vintage Colnago with Campagnolo Super Record hanging on the wall.

First of all, congrats on moving together. That’s a big and exciting step. :slightly_smiling_face:

Mine is in our living room, but that’s because we don’t have a basement or garage.

That’s a question for r/relationshipadvice

No, seriously, that’s something you have to discuss with your SO. Communication is key. You are moving into a shared space and such decisions have to be made jointly. Some are more understanding than others. Some become more understanding with time once they figure out how important cycling is to us and/or how expensive the bikes are.

If e. g. you each have your rooms, I think you could make a strong argument for storing it there. Living rooms are shared spaces, so that’d be more complicated.

PS Pro tip: it helps to have something to trade and barter. When I went furniture shopping with my wife, it turned into a fun bartering session where we agreed on letting her pick some shelves so that I could pick the color of the chairs for our dining room table. Point being, perhaps your SO has a similar ask?

Hallway on a cheap but respectable looking Huxlo wall mount…

As for the take on this by my partner, this is very situation and relationship specific. Generally says it makes the space feel smaller but understands and it is out of the way. Helps that I’m the owner of the flat…

I’m single and live in a 600sqft apartment. I have 2 road bikes plus a Wahoo trainer with a bike and then another road bike for Elite rollers in my living room; another tucked in the bedroom closet; my first ever road bike in balcony storage closet (sentimental value); ran out of room and put the CX bike in the detached garage. I’m thinking I could squeeze another in somewhere. I think I may have just figured out why I’m single

Yes, on the other side of the bed.

Divorced.

If you don’t, you really should start waxing your chain. I think that’s the most important thing for keeping your bike inside

I changed to wax last year (my bike is stored in my small 1 bedroom flat), I wished I’d know about it 10 years ago when I moved into the flat!

Thanks! Actually it’s a trail period for us, after that it will be definite.

This will probably be the best solution. But then there are two bikes in one room (trainer + road bike).

That’s a neat solution! No one walking into the handlebars?

It’s not a straight hallway and is setback out of the natural walking path… 38cm bars help too

Waxed is the way to go here! Also for the clothes and legs.

I just put my bikes in a bike bra. No mess and helps keep marks off the walls and floors.

And then where d you put your bikes? Leaning on a wall?

Yeah propped against a wall. Are people’s hoods and bar tape so caked in filth that this is a problem? Wish I could hoist them up in the air but I don’t live in a Georgian townhouse.
