Big life changes, positive for riding. Probably. Looking for macro planning help (moving overseas for 12 months)

What do you do with newfound time over the course of a season? What are some of the nuances when supplementing a running focus with cycling? I’m looking for some help in approaching a macro training plan from July to July. How would you do it, with the overarching goal being marathon and ironman?

I’m moving to Korea for 12 months as part of a military move and am expecting time to train, explore, and “reinvent” myself (no pets, spouse is not coming, and I expect work hours to go down a bit).

I’ve been crit racing for the past two years, which I’ve absolutely loved and want to still do a few road races. However the ultimate goal is IM worlds. And there is a big blank canvas in front of me, and I could use some help crafting an outline!

With a marathon I’m looking to do in March. I’m thinking of doing a sort of reverse periodization for cycling to supplement my marathon training, and maintain the cycling gains I’ve made the past two years. I’m front-loading the intensity because I’m coming off of a decent volume training block in the spring.

  • July: VO2 block (lots of good info here)
  • Aug-Nov (16 weeks): Low volume sweet spot base plus Z2 rides to collect passport stamps
  • Dec-Feb (12 weeks) Polarized med volume December-February
  • Recover / super easy in March for marathon

Reverse periodize again

  • Vo2 block for all of April
  • Z2 / base for May & June, come back to the U.S. in July, setting up a base for racing in fall and winter 2024.
